gcorgnet:

Hey, just a heads up that after chatting with 4 different people on Amazon support chat, I was able to get a $150 gift card loaded on my account which is essentially the difference between what I paid for the drive and what it would cost to buy it now.

This cimbined with the money I'll get from the refund once I return my defective disk should let me buy another one...

How many drives did you buy and how many failed? What sizes?

LostBoyNZ: What would people recommend for testing the drives? Mine format successfully in Windows so at least not DOA but I wonder if there's any other particular tests you'd recommend? Thanks!

If your in windows I you could consider doing a test using the seagate software, there is probably a "destructive test" that wipes that data on the drive you could do that.  It will take many many hours.  It writes and reads from every sector on the disk.

My HDD didn't get very far past just plugging them in before they failed.

Is it normal for the iron wolf drives to be quite noisy when read or write is occurring? Seem louder than a normal pc drive

I wouldn't say they are particularly loud. They're perhaps a tiny bit louder than the 4TB drives I replaced.

All the reported failures I have seen have either been failure to spin up or clicking, with the drives not showing up in Windows.

If you need to RMA to Seagate, make sure you put all the drives in a single RMA request (there is an option to add more). Don't bother contacting their support for advance replacements or to try and send them to Sydney, they are useless.

For four drives, you may be over $1,000 (includes shipping costs), so you will need to keep a record of everything to provide to the logistics company to avoid paying GST again or to claim it back. Note, you can't claim back the Customs and bio-security fees.

You could try Amazon, but I doubt you'll have any luck. I didn't... I ended up submitting a complaint to ACCC. They will only offer return for a refund. If you can't be bothered, they're still a good deal for someone else willing to take on the RMA process. I could do with one more myself =P.

It only lets me RMA 3 drives because they are purchased out of region and there is a limit of 3 out of region drives per year to RMA.

I was not aware of that. That's pretty rubbish. The product is faulty, after all.

I got a lot of 3 drives ages back (beofre this deal) and one was dead with clicking a few times on powerup. It would show sometimes as its model in device manager but the PC would not do anything with it, even smart was failing to get any readings. This was on a direct connection to a mobo sata plug, on a USB dock or the SAS expander it just did nothing.

There were new ones at basically the same price so I sent that one back and hit buy again on it. And bought 3 more drives so that is how I ended up making a 5 drive array instead of a 3. Oops.

16TB has this in HDS overnight:

Recently the following entries added to System Event Log:
20 errors, most recent: The driver detected a controller error on \Device\RaidPort1. (LSI_SAS2i; ID: 11)
The following function can be used to improve the situation: Disk -> Surface Test -> Disk repair
At this point, warranty replacement of the disk is not yet possible, only if the health drops further.

It's been slowly dropping the past few days from 100% down to 95% on a 15 day old drive.

I'm starting to feel like we've had some faulty drives dumped on us all.

Just starting another full surface test (I did one when they arrived as always before putting any data on them

The failure rate of these drives does seem to be abnormally high, just from the limited sample set here on Geekzone.

I bough a single 16tb drive in the deal. It came in a sealed box with sticker seal and the drive itself was in an air tight sealed silver plastic wrapper like they usually come in.

Looks completely legitimate, but the high failure rate is weird.

Mine is perfect so far , fingers crossed.

Anecdotally it seems to be the 20s that are really bad.
