Mainland Tactix (netball) might object.

No matter what you name them, someone will be able to be offended.

The Highlanders were a bloody thirsty lot, Hurricanes kill hundred yearly. Chiefs have a weapon in their imagery, the list is endless.

Perhaps we could come up with a random 12 digit number and assign teams names from that.

I like the name 'Canterbury Wizards' and for pre-match entertainment they can roll out the Wizard of Christchurch to do magic tricks and good luck spells. Did you know that he claimed to have cast a successful spell to disperse fog from Oamaru airport in 2006? Shame he didn't use the same spell at the Super Rugby Final that year.

Well a Wizard can be related to a Grand Wizard.

I feel that with all the love and feelings our Muslim cousins have received from us Cantabs (and off course others), they may well say, "no, lets just leave it as it is for our people in Canterbury"

I'm not aware of any murmurings over the years re the name.

I really feel that the sentiment here is WELL above the sentiment elsewhere. Yes, its a big deal or a BIG deal, but I do wonder what our Muslim friends think. Its hard to tell because as usual the media latches onto a big story they can feed for weeks. I am quite free this weekend I was intending to go to the Deans Ave mosque, just to a be a white guy and say "Hi, hope you are ok", no more. I might ask that question maybe. But its delicate off course. If I find a casual conversation I may ask, it all depends. I actually feel, and I may be wrong, that of all the people with this on their mind, our Muslim Kiwis are probably the least involved. But its delicate, yes.

The next thing will be to ban the cross, or anything that has a cross on it which includes the flag.

Wouldn't be the worst thing.

Crosses are outdated symbols that have no place in modern society these days, outside of their respective religions.

Maybe also the Maltese Cross, that St John's uses. And the St John's name itself?

Someone on Neighbourly posted this "A very good letter to the editor in the press the other week talked of St Johns, as first responders into the mosque,  have the Malta cross on their ambulances and carry the name of the Knights of St John also known as the "Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem" or simply "Knights of Malta, who also fought in the holy wars and tended to the English pilgrims to Jerusalem."

Wherever you look at History you will find this. You can literally cherry pick who you want to pick on.

It's just the name of a rugby team, not the end of western civilisation.

First world problem if I've ever seen one!

I assume then you will have no hesitation in changing your own name if someone finds some part of it offensive?

Also, will you be paying for said minor issue with name change and branding at the Crusaders?

Maybe it's growing but I don't think the amount of people who want it was particularly large to begin with. Let's see if people still want to change the name in a little while after all the emotion has died down, if there's still an appetite for change (which I'm skeptical of), then we should look at it. The only source for any public opinion I've managed to find is the polls on news sites and most of them show a significant majority in favour of keeping the name. As of writing this, the petition opposing the name change has hit nearly 30k signatures too. I haven't seen any major effort by the Muslim community for this change either. So who's actually behind it?

A lot of other users have brought this up, but let's just say the name gets changed- what then? There's other team names that could potentially be seen as offensive by at least some people, should they be changed too? For example, let's look at the Hurricanes. Hurricanes kill thousands of people every year and cause billions of dollars of damage, should they change the name? Of course not. It's a sports team and we shouldn't look into it any more than that. There's plenty of other examples in Super Rugby and elsewhere. Point being, the name change could open a big can of worms which we absolutely do not want to open.

It's absolutely true that the Crusades were a period of extreme violence, but this was in the Medieval Era. Violence, whether it is about religion or anything else, was a part of life for most people. But I won't go too much into the history side of it. People on both sides of the debate can and have cherry picked what they want from that period to suit their own argument.

I havent sen ANY words from the Muslim community. I have seen concerning words from them about post attack discrimination, concerns that wearing hijab is not respectful, but not a peep on the name change. It seems to me to be no more then a media frenzy. The petition is meaningless, you cant quote a number and not have a baseline. St John also fought in the Crusades. The vast amount of history involves something negative, and today, these are just historical records, what we do and act like today is whats important.
