All of the above is subject to consultation/price negotiations with the airlines. If the airlines don't want to pay CAPEX generally doesn't happen without a direct business case.

Unless, if our government or a foreign government mandate changes to the security rules then that money must be spent on upgrading equipment and/or space without consultation or price negotiations. Or such negotiations are “from X date we are mandated to do this, it will cost this, if you don’t like it then stop operating from here.”

If you’ve travelled domestically on a jet out of Auckland, there is considerable expense being made by Auckland airport in the domestic terminal due to the updated security rules which require domestic passengers to be screened with body scanners.

Other airports have the space able to do start installing or using the scanners now, however Auckland didn’t have the space to do so. They were originally due to be used from early 2021, but were delayed due to covid.

Looks like there will be some form of 3D scanning for arrivals at Auckland.

We’re looking to automate some existing processes and make use of advancements in 3D scanning to provide greater biosecurity protection for New Zealand.

Just went through Singapore and Hong Kong Airports recently. Thought i'd share my experience.

Singapore - very pleasant as to be expected, don't use the priority pass lounges in T3 - they are totally full to the brim and simply not "exclusive" enough now, you're probably better off using the public facilities - service isn't as nice in these lounges anymore unless you really need to take a shower. Security and everything was a breeze, as to be expected in Singapore - everyone is super nice and the airport is somewhere you don't mind being stuck in.

Hong Kong - Terrible experience, was fortunately cattled around security by Cathay Pacific because for some reason they had to re-check the NZ traveler pass, despite this having already been checked and verified at check-in. The security check the other passengers were going through looked awful, like out of some dystopian nightmare, with people in Hazmat suits guiding people to testing stations - they still live in 2020. Security are awful, unfriendly, took random photos of people in the queue without permission (not directly of one passenger but 2-3). At one point I saw them rudely asking some old lady's son to pull her out of the wheelchair without even giving him a chance to properly lift her as they did something - no idea what was the issue. If you miss you transit or get stuck there somehow, be prepared to get screwed by the government's "transit passengers cannot spend more than 24 hours in HK airport" rule. They also keep asking you if you are carrying guns or knives, I got asked 4 times on the way to the security check. Very weird and unpleasant, I recommend paying the few extra hundred dollars to avoid Hong Kong airport entirely if you can and go back through Singapore.

This is taken from the UK Gov HK Travel advisory

"There is a risk when transiting that you will be placed into isolation in hospital in Hong Kong. All passengers transiting Hong Kong Inter-national Airport will be subject to advanced screening measures, including temperature checks. Passengers deemed to have a high temperature will undergo further checks by the Port Health Office at the airport. If you meet further risk criteria, you will be transferred to a Hong Kong public hospital for mandatory checks/treatment..."

Good to know about Hong Kong. It used to be a fairly pleasant transfer point. Sounds like they have actually managed to take the spot from LAX as the least pleasant transfer between NZ and Europe.

Is that actually possible? I know people who have transited through places that smelled strongly of sulphur with the sound of ceaseless screaming in the background and they said they'd still prefer that to transiting LAX.

Transiting home through LAX is a dull but relatively painless experience. Transiting in to the USA through there is to be avoided at all cost.

Yea I agree, it used to be fairly run of the mill, the security were always a bit funny but no worse than KL in terms of "take your shoes off, take your belt off, take ur X off..." - this time it was just much worse and much less friendly, perhaps it will get better once they decide to drop all the zero-covid stuff.

I'd say if you are a seasoned traveler, you'll probably be able to deal with the experience ok - but if you're a somewhat blase/casual traveler, make sure you have a good amount of space in the transit time. Compared to Singapore though, it's just an awful experience lol.
