Apparently by accident.

This is terrible.

They had to admit it there was to much evidence to back up it was hit with one of their own missiles.

What is really going to happen though, they put their hand up and say our bad a lot of bad press and that will be about it.

My heart goes out to the family's that this has affected it is such a tragic incident.

Awkward

Probably best to stay on the ground for the next few decades. Roll on teleportation.

I'm not reassured by their statement saying the people responsible will be prosecuted. That almost certainly means that innocent people will be punished. Terrible situation across the board.

There's a certain irony the Iranians can shoot down a plane filled with their own civilians but can't seem to get a hit on any of the Israeli military jets that are always blowing their missiles up on the ground.

You're going to have to lift your game to defeat the great Satan.

I don't think it *needed* to be balanced out. I don't think the families of any affected by either crashed will feel "better" now.

It is utterly beyond me how anyone could even consider shooting a non military transporter of any type, be it plane or bus or train or whatever. I am sure I read somewhere, that domestic airliners have a transponders that prevent SAM's and radar guided missiles from targeting passenger planes, requires 2 sets of overrides, to prevent "accidentical" take downs?

As someone mentioned, the people truly responsible for this despicable act won't be held accountable, but some people will be punished.

When it was announced a passenger plane had gone down in that region and it was mechanical failure, it felt pretty unlikely given the timing of the other missile strikes.

All in all, a massive tragedy.

That is likely to be a quite common view but how can you be so sure? On balance, a negative outcome may be more likely but we don't need to present it as fact.

The statement you refer to at least allows the possibility of a just outcome:

A just outcome might be more likely while the regime is facing significant challenges. They may well prosecute those who made the decision rather than creating another sham trial.

That's why I said "might".

Taking a pessimistic position seems much more likely to be correct but I remember when the Berlin Wall came down against the general pessimistic view.

Thing is, there is no way to know if the "right" people were held responsible unless you know for sure who did it, and have some way of verifying that the person they present is even the person who had the title at the time.

Whoever it is there will be a chain of command. Whoever pressed the button is not responsible. Where does the buck stop? It's hard to know. It certainly won't be the rule of Iran. So I got nobody is killed because of this. It's likely one of those unfortunate events.

@Batman commercial aircraft just don't fly where they like it would have been on the flight plan! Would be approved by ATC
