While I'm sure that's true, it doesn't change the fact that he is a truly awful human being.

rise of Trump invokes Godwin's Law in a Washington Post article!

dare not post a link but ... ! If the other parties are smart they would join forces and vote for ONE alternative, not 20. But I'm no American.

It's interesting the amount of FUD that the Establishment is throwing up around Trump. They're not enamoured of a man in the Oval Office who they do not own.

Not disimilar to the FUD being thrown up by the EU and their fellow travellers in the UK government who cry that the sky will fall if Britain leaves the EU.

I suspect it has something to do with the fact that he had never run any portion of government. Rather, a businessman, and one with unorthodox practices and chequered history.

Unfortunately in the game of politics, the nicest people are the first to be kicked out. With the inverse relation in mind, he has a very good chance. We will know in November.

He is one who expresses many views that have been suppressed. That does not make him awful - merely different from you.

He is definitely awful. Anyone who thinks otherwise is as deceived as those poor fools who vote for him. The comparisons with the Weimar Republic are not without substance.

I disagree. I do not find him awful at all. Sometimes he fails to engage brain before opening mouth, perhaps, but politicians of all kinds play to the audience in order to get elected. Personally I find it refreshing to have a politician say what he thinks and allow us to disagree with him or not rather than try and only say what they think we all want to hear and then ignore it later.

I think he's one of the most repulsive individuals of modern times - sure, there'll be others out there that are just as vile, but few if any ever will have the chance of being able to let loose the level of havoc that will occur should he be elected US president.

And I'm quite happy to admit that I think considerably lesser of those who find him appealing - in my mind, such support indicates someone who is fundamentally disconnected with reality. It also confirms my sense of how retarded the US populace is (or at least Republican supporters) and how $@#$ed their political system is.

He may say what he thinks, but a true politician never says what he means. Otherwise he wouldn't be a politician. I guess the same applies to his peers.

A mere +1 wasn't enough for this post - completely agree.

I find it hard to know whether Trump is a politician or a ring-master at a circus.

His political rallies resemble wrestling matches - outrageously  entertaining, but not believable.

What comparisons with the Weimar Republic? Sounds like it could be high-brow analysis but I haven't seen such comparisons here.

Here are some of his main positions. Exactly which ones are so awful we must hate him for them? To be honest, many of them sound not that unlike some of what you'll hear in NZ.

For example, I doubt there would be a raft of complaints if his tax reforms were proposed here:

The Trump Tax Plan Achieves These Goals

1) If you are single and earn less than $25,000, or married and jointly earn less than $50,000, you will not owe any income tax. That removes nearly 75 million households – over 50% – from the income tax rolls. They get a new one page form to send the IRS saying, “I win,” those who would otherwise owe income taxes will save an average of nearly $1,000 each.
2) All other Americans will get a simpler tax code with four brackets – 0%, 10%, 20% and 25% – instead of the current seven. This new tax code eliminates the marriage penalty and the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) while providing the lowest tax rate since before World War II.
3) No business of any size, from a Fortune 500 to a mom and pop shop to a freelancer living job to job, will pay more than 15% of their business income in taxes. This lower rate makes corporate inversions unnecessary by making America’s tax rate one of the best in the world.
4) No family will have to pay the death tax. You earned and saved that money for your family, not the government. You paid taxes on it when you earned it.

The main beneficiaries of this policy woulds be the ultra-rich and the Big Corporates.

Very Trump.  undecided
