nathan: “Prolife”

It's not really "pro-life", it's "pro-birth". After they're born they're someone else's problem, especially if they're born to poor or non-white people.

Pro or anti whatever, doesn't matter. As long as they uphold justice and are incorruptible. But is that asking for too much?

There's a lot more to it than that, and it does matter.  The romans who crucified Jesus were upholding justice and probably incorruptible.

kingdragonfly: article: Amy Coney Barrett meets Donald Trump’s two main litmus tests: She has made clear she would invalidate [Obamacare]. and take health care away from millions of people and undermine a woman’s reproductive freedom,” said Nan Aron, the president of Alliance for Justice, a liberal group.

Barbara Lagoa is the logical nomination. More experience and from Florida which is important at election time. I'd be surprised if Trump nominates Barret. On the other hand Trump is rarely logical.

Fred99:

GOP have declared war, Democrats are scared to fight fire with fire - yet again.

Don't you ever wonder why the Dems don't use their leverage, when they have it?

They're either stupid, or they don't care, or they get paid and collect Donor bribes regardless - and you don't have to do any actual work in "opposition", except blame the other side...

Pelosi rips up Trumps SOTU speech, behind him after the speech, then the next day votes to approve his increased budget

They have leverage here too, there is an upcoming Government Shutdown looming, she has to agree to the funding request, way more leverage than an impeachment.  That vote is next week, but we already know how she is voting - with the "opposition".

Fred99:

puts pressure on GOP senators who would refuse (again) to play by the rules centre-stage just before an election.  Plus impeachment take priority in senate (ie over appointing SC judges)

they are playing by the "rules" that's the problem

if roles were reversed, and Swamp Turtle McConnell was Senate Minority leader we know he would do everything possible to stop or slow this down, so the question is, will Chuck Schumer too, or will he just play #Resistance

Senate runs on unanimous consent, anyone can slow the business down, rules about Committee hearings, Bills can be read to stall for time ; all on top of the War Powers / Impeachment you mention.  But will the Senate Minority leader Schumer do any of those things?

AOC should signal she will primary Schumer right now.  If Schumer is primaried, or the fear of a primary, in a deep blue state like NY, full of Progressive voters, he will be motivated to do everything he can to stop the SC nomination in this Senate session.

If Chuck doesn't have to worry about a Primary, then what motivates him to not just cut a deal with Republicans?  Schumer has previously cut deals with Republicans, to fast track Trumps lower court judicial appointments, why not again?  That has happened under Schumer's "leadership", we know he is willing to cave.

i'm not sure it does. a judge's job description is to uphold justice and be incorruptible - nothing more nothing less.

morals plays no part afaik according to Dawkins' "The Selfish Gene". i would have thought as soon as morals are questioned we are admitting there is a god. therefore if there is a god then pro-life/birth is what god wants. so i don't see how morals can be used to argue this?

anyway that's besides the point.

I'm an atheist.  "Morals" are necessary - placing the needs of society ahead of the individual (greed) because the human species cannot survive as isolated individuals.  We're not good enough to survive alone, run too slow to catch prey, swim too slow to catch fish, spend too much time raising offspring etc.

I don't think Dawkins had an issue with humans being "social" creatures, you don't need a "god" to have morality.

New York, Portland, and Seattle aren't welcome in the Kingdom of Gilead:

The Justice Department on Monday singled out Portland, New York City and Seattle as "anarchist jurisdictions" – cities that the Trump administration said have allowed violence to persist during months of civil demonstrations over racial injustice and police brutality and could then lose federal funding.

"It is my hope that the cities identified by the Department of Justice today will reverse course and become serious about performing the basic function of government and start protecting their own citizens," Attorney General William Barr said in a statement.

As the US reaches 200,000 Covid-19 deaths, Trump says he's done a 'phenomenal job'

The Whitehouse, South Lawn, September 18, 2020

Remarks by President Trump Before Marine One Departure

"We have done a phenomenal job with respect to Covid-19."

Is this just standard Trump BS, or does the Narcissist in Chief actually believe this?

Possibly, he does.

In which case he is seriously out of touch with reality, and we should be very, very afraid.  😕
