Batman:

Eva888: I still don’t believe he has Covid and wonder if it’s all being staged. Looking at him in both videos, yes he’s pale, but that only means a lack of the usual orange make up. His eyes don’t look glazed and he’s too bright and chirpy. As for the drive to greet his supporters...how many people who have ordinary flu could do all that stuff let alone someone with Covid. Normally you are lying around with a flushed face and glazed eyes and not enough energy to even move, let alone get dressed in a suit and take a drive around the block. None of it adds up unless he’s an alien lizard man masquerading as a human on this flat earth.

possible but highly unlikely. there is only so big a lie you want to make up. this big a lie you suggest is political suicide. those close to him and from the garden event - you think those are all staged too?

It would make more sense for the big lie to just be Trump and Melania. An actual outbreak amongst the Republican elite would make it easier to credibly say Trump had it as well. There seemed nothing wrong with him based on the appearances he made, and the treatment he supposedly received doesn't gel with his apparent lack of symptoms.

And now he's saying "don't be afraid of Covid", and as predicted his base is lapping it up and pre-ordering their "Trump beat Covid" commemorative coins.

I don't know if I believe it was fake, but I certainly wouldn't be at all surprised if Trump miraculously returns a negative Covid result in record time and is back on the campaign trail before the weekend.

But fake or not, the narrative will now be that Trump beat it in just a couple of days, and it isn't that bad of an illness. They will also say that, having had Covid himself, Trump is the only man who can understand what it means to everyday Americans and is the only one who can eliminate it.

The only thing more depressing than his predictability is the knowledge that his rapid base will buy into it hook, line, and sinker.

From CNN:

President Trump has left Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to return to the White House after spending three nights in the hospital being treated for coronavirus.

Trump recklessly downplayed his experience in a tweet announcing his departure.

"Don't be afraid of Covid. Don't let it dominate your life," Trump wrote, even as his doctors warned he wasn't yet "out of the woods." The building he's returning to has become a center for viral contagion — in part because of disregard for mitigation measures.

Trump gave a thumbs up after he left the hospital and entered an SUV.

kingdragonfly: At the very least, this COVID outbreak has likely damaged the Supreme Court judge process.

It may have taken out a couple of republicans, and I've read that only 3 Republican have to switch to scupper Amy Coney Barrett

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/oct/03/amy-coney-barrett-confirmation-senators-coronavirus

only 3! I love the optimism.  How ironic that the Republicans blocked efforts to support remote voting at the start of the pandemic.  Swamp Turtle McConnell may regret that ha ha, still 300 judges appointed and 2 scotus ain't half bad in a term.

But I bet they find a way.  This is the stuff US Politicians live for.  Stir up the religious right voting bloc, energize their turn out on an issue that shouldn't be #1, soak up the oxygen in a culture war about uteruses, take in record donations, and then being able to blame not doing anything on unelected higher courts for writing useless laws.

Imaginary-sky-fairies have a lot to answer for.

Well at least some good news, with Trump's super-speader event taking down half the White House, the CDC is now free to speak freely about Covid19 without political interference from Trump and co.

Mother Jones - 29 Ways Trump and the GOP Are Making It Harder to Vote

today

Republicans are doing all they can to preserve their power at the expense of the democratic process.

Here is a comprehensive list of the ways Trump and his party are making it harder to vote.

[headings only]

Voting by mail:

Blocking mail-in ballot requests
Blocking universal mail voting
Requiring an excuse to vote by mail
Preventing drop boxes
Throwing out ballots with mismatched signatures
Requiring a witness signature
Throwing out “naked ballots”
Prohibiting the collection of ballots
Sabotaging the Postal Service

Voting in person:

Strict voter ID laws
Cuts to early voting
Disenfranchising people with felony convictions
Closing polling places
Recruiting poll watchers
Blocking college students from voting

Registering to vote:

Blocking online registration
Purging the voter rolls

Election security:

Fighting efforts to reduce reliance on dodgy technology
Keeping threats to election security under wraps
Blocking election integrity legislation

Disinformation:

Encouraging people to vote twice
Lying about voter fraud
Setting harmful expectations of a quick result
Dismissing Russian intervention
Doing Russia’s work *
Targeting Black voters with illegal robocalls

Vote counting:

Weaponizing “delays”
Blocking late-arriving ballots
Preparing to to nullify the results

Trump’s vocal attacks on the credibility of mail voting and the ability of the US Postal Service to deliver mail ballots have been amplified by the Russian government, Trump’s intelligence analysts said in early September.

Don't be so quick. Trump is back at the WH. First thing he did was to rip off his mask and continue politicking. I'm picking his popularity to increase after his triumphant conquest of the world's deadliest virus.

Maybe some of his aides really got Covid and Trump then took the opportunity to prove his point about it being nothing to worry about and double whammy using it to gain sympathy votes and or show his strength. He says he’s better than 20 years ago. After all, this is politics and anything goes. I watched his upbeat doctor reading Trumps condition with notes, as if the report had been scripted for him. Can’t help questioning the narrative.

I feel for his young son Baron who is at a vulnerable age. Poor kid burdened with his father's shenanigans and the vitriol against him. I can only imagine how torn he must feel and what he endures at school.

What about Melania? Hardly a word about her condition.

The Guardian - Trump's desperation to leave hospital shows the dangers ahead

today

The president’s carelessness about others’ safety shows he will do almost anything not to lose in November

The desperation that has driven Donald Trump to leave hospital prematurely and theatrically pull off his mask on the White House balcony while in the throes of coronavirus infection gives some measure of how dangerous the next four weeks will be.

Many students of Trump’s life and career have warned that he would be prepared to sacrifice anyone - even those closest to him - to spare himself the humiliation of a one-term presidency, but even they surely could not have anticipated how literal that sacrifice would be. ...

Republicans have completely lost sight of the values America supposedly represents. It is now win at all costs, regardless of how many rules of decent behaviour you have to break, or how dirty you have to fight. This makes me wonder just what it is they think they are fighting for. I certainly wouldn't want to live in the kind of country they seem to be trying to build. If select groups are able to make up rules to suit themselves as they go along, the next select group may have radically different ideas of who should be in or out. Evangelicals profess to live by the bible, but they seem only interested in the parts about discrimination and punishment. The ones about forgiveness and turning the other cheek seem lost on them. Lying and hypocrisy also seem to have acquired special status.

Power, control and money, what else.  They're politicians, taking bribes from corporations, making us sick and lifelong good customers of the for-profit health business.

If I could change one thing - campaign finance reform

Trump mostly has all the power, as the leader controls the way a lot of the funny money funding flows down, greasing the wheels.

But really you keep saying the Republicans and you should find & replace that with politicians or the system

Donald Trump did not turn America into a Fascist Oligarchy, America already was a Fascist Oligarchy. Trump just took the mask off.  If Trump really is Hitler, then we are doomed, because you'll go back to sleep and pretend it wasn't like that long before Trump.

The media want Trump reelected for the ratings.  They don't care about the country and only the constant crazy news

The Democrats don't care about what Trump does.  They're just annoyed he says the quiet bits out loud.

the tiniest violin in the world is playing right now

He's not a poor wee helpless kid.  He is as privileged as you can get.  He's not feeling torn.

The secret service detail will waste those bullies you're worried about.

and the vitriol, well tough sh1t - I hear money and privilege is a great antidote for that

God works in extremely mysterious ways.  Baron is Melania's anchor baby

I actually agree with you about campaign finance reform. Will wonders never cease?

Of course many TV families would starve without the obscene amounts spent on political advertising. But then other families might be able to buy food if they didn't have to support fund-raisers.

I say Republicans because I vehemently disagree with you that all politicians are equal. I would have thought I had made that abundantly clear by now. I note you are also terming Trump's America a Fascist oligarchy. I thought you disputed the Fascist label. But do feel free to change your mind.

The media and the Democrats care about a lot more than you may think. There is a difference between cynicism and insight.
