When Duncan Garner asked Cindy how a single mother of 3 who is a cleaner is going to afford this increase in petrol tax? The answer from Cindy was clear. “We will give those in that situation $75 a week to cover the extra costs.”

So now it seems that Labour's "Families Package" is now no longer about lifting children out of poverty. Instead it is merely insulating (some) families from the increased costs that the Labour Government is causing.

Who is "Cindy" ?

Perhaps labour can argue that an increase in the rate of an existing tax isn't a 'new' tax.

Having regional fuel tax for Auckland would be consistent with pre-election statements. I can't remember whether they mentioned extending it to other regions. Ardern seemed to be suggesting they would on the AM show today. TBH I could have misheard. She is so verbose it can be hard to sort the wheat from the chaff.

She wouldn't even categorically rule out reducing the open road speed limit to 70kmh - a recommendation in a French report the govt has been using as a source of ideas

But nobody ever goes 100kmh do they? Reducing the speed limit is just PC, the real way to reduce risk on that road is fix the road. The issue is not speed, it is lack of ability or poor driving. I would argue that reducing the speed limit on any stretch of road will do little to reduce fatalities.

If somebody is breaking the law and driving at 120 and has an accident, the issue is not the speed limit because they would have been breaking the posted speed limit whether it was 70 or 100.

Likewise if someone is driving at 100 and has an accident through lack of ability or poor judgement, having a lower speed limit would be irrelevant.

Is there anything that she can't twist? From my perspective, it's a new tax as there was no mention of a National Tax ever mentioned before.

How do others view this? New tax? Is Labour being dishonest?

So suddenly the actual benefits from the fuel tax will drop substantially. Let's hope that that becomes another broken promise.

Yeah - commencing in 2030 if you read the fine print...

The Shore already has the busway. No other part of Auckland has that. They can wait their turn for Light Rail.

West Auckland is within the next ten years.

There's plenty of corners on that road where even 60kmh would be fatal unless you're Ken Block, and even then not sharing the road. It comes down to common sense, that's why they have 25 or 30 warning signs on corners.

To restructure that road would be collosal, I'm well aware of that, a tunnel would also be extreme. I think the extra millions should be spent on compulsory advanced driver training, seeing as NZ boasts some of the most extreme roads for a developed country.

I would prefer it NOT run down Dom Road, that sounds like a disaster. I think it should run down the motorway and have a bus network that connects you to those stops, with a max of say... 6 stops between Britomart and AA.

I would be happy to pay quite a premium on my petrol if they ran rail from Albany to Britomart and Britomart to the Airport. It's badly needed.

Maybe I'll take a sabbatical and go live in Singapore while it's built :)

The Rimutaka hill has sections where 100k is fine. Short sections but still ...

Ditto the Rai and Whangamoa ranges between Nelson and Blenheim.

There are sections of all those roads where it is safe (and fun) to accelerate up to at 100k for short periods of time. By doing so you keep your average speed up and make the journey shorter.

I could happily live in Singapore I think, though I expect I'd be considerably bigger than I am now with all that great cheap food.

Everything has it's pluses and minuses.

My 8 year old was able to navigate us around Singapore using public transport if we gave him the destination. We were pretty surprised, he seems to have a penchant for it :)

He could even operate the machines that spat out tickets and everything.

Some hands on driver training that starts with traction and control would be highly beneficial. There is disturbing lack of knowledge of how cars work.

Most drivers would be horrified to learn the contact area between a medium sized car and the road is about the area of 4 large hand prints. Only two of which have genuine traction.

Instead of second language being offered, I think National should have introduced free Defensive Driving (though I think there are MAJOR flaws in the basics being taught in these classes such as if you are a car following a motorbike, 2 second rule is way too low since a bike stops in far far less distance) and skid control courses. I believe it should be a mandatory part of new driver training.
