Again justice for Trump is different than justice for most Americans. If Trump wins in 2024, pardons will be handed out like gift bags.

Washington Post: Trump gets another week to comply with Jan. 6 committee document subpoena

Former president Donald Trump will have an additional week to meet the deadline to turn over documents to the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
...
The documents were requested as a part of the subpoena issued by the committee to the former president on Oct. 21. The subpoena also directed that Trump testify under oath on or about Nov. 14 as well. It’s unclear whether he will comply with that deadline.

The committee’s subpoena lists detailed documents and communications Trump is expected to produce, including telephone records, text messages or any communications related to Jan. 6, 2021, including any exchanges with members of Congress and members of militia or extremist groups regarding Jan. 6.

Committee members have previously said that they have not yet resolved how to compel Trump to comply with the subpoena if he refuses to voluntarily cooperate. Lawmakers could move to hold the former president in contempt. But legal experts and lawyers representing clients involved in the investigation told The Washington Post that it’s unlikely the Justice Department would ultimately prosecute Trump for contempt of Congress.

Trump has dropped his biggest hint yet that he will run again in 2024.

IMO if Biden runs and wins the Democratic nomination pretty much any Republican could run against him and win.

I'm really hoping that Trump and Ron Descants

  • don't team up on one ticket as as president/VP
  • both run
  • one runs as a third-party

This would plenty of derisive laugher from me.

Given what he said about Ron recently, I don't think Don would be looking at it, but who knows?

Trump would team up with the Devil himself if it meant being President again.

On the Republican side at least the tradition is a ton of very nasty infighting until it's clear who the Chosen One will be, after which everyone pretends they were on their side all along. So saying bad things about the other guy at this stage doesn't mean they won't be BFF later on.

Your quote there actually ties in with the book I'm reading at the moment (Why We Did It), referring to Elise Stefanik, a former never-Trumper who came around to be one of his biggest defenders when she realised attaching herself to the star of the orange buffoon could propel her to new heights in American politics:

It might have seemed callous, but when you are a star, they let you do it.

From Harvard to Congress, Stefanik had put her personal ambition first and she wasn’t stopping now. Muslim Bans. Sexual assault apologetics. Attempting to make a former game show host an unelected autocrat by advancing fabricated conspiracies about our elections being fraudulent.

She chose to go along with this because it was her path to power. And all indications are that if Trump runs for president again, she will have her eye on the penultimate rung on the striver’s ladder, the vice presidency.

Throughout all this she may tell herself that she’s just doing what voters demand and that she had no other choice if she wanted to succeed. But that sh-t ain’t the truth.

Elise Stefanik is in charge. There were many paths available. This is the one she has chosen for her life.
Deep down, I suspect she’s happy with it.

I dunno if she would be keen on a vice-presidency though.

The vice president is just the president-in-waiting, either when Trump karks it in office or at the following election. So if all she cares about is her career path she'll be fine being VP and keeping out of the way until it's her turn to be La Presidenta (doesn't quite have the same ring as El Presidente though).

Whether it'll actually be de Santis is another question. The last thing a strongman El Presidente needs is a capable second banana (look at Pence as an example), so the playbook would be to sideline de Santis and drop in some milquetoast placeholder. Alternately, and Hitler and Stalin were masters at this, play possible usurpers off against each other so they don't have time to focus on the prize.

If Biden doesn't run again, who are the Dems going to put up? Kamala Harris?

They're going to lose both the House and Senate in these midterms, which will leave a lame duck president for two years. And unless the Dems can pull an amazingly charismatic candidate out of thin air they're going to lose big in 2024 as well.

I'd say it'll be between Trump and DeSantis for the next president. If choosing between those two I'd rather it was DeSantis - at least he doesn't appear to be mentally ill.

But what America (and the rest of the world for that matter) needs is for the silent middle to start speaking up. The rhetoric on both sides has become so extreme there's no middle ground anymore, and it seems the extremists are the only ones with a voice right now.

Gavin Newsom would be my pick for the Democratic nomination. He's a really good public speaker. Whether he has any baggage or is popular amongst Democrats I have no idea.

Karmala Harris would be a no-hoper.

I think Gavin would be good too. He knows how to get the attention of voting Democrats, but I dunno if he would want to be president or not.

I often wonder if 2016 would have turned out differently if Bernie had won the nomination instead of Hillary.

538 has Democrats definitely losing the house, the Senate is a bit different though - odds there are 54/100 Republicans win it, 46/100 Democrats win. Quite different to a fortnight ago.

Sigh.

Sometimes I just wish the orange buffoon and all his cronies would just shut their big, stupid, loud mouths for once in their lives, accept that not everyone likes them, and shock! horror! they may not get enough votes to win as a result.

Senate prediction has been updated to 58/100 Republican, 42/100 Democrat.

Oh yay 🙄

Finished reading Why We Did It by Tim Miller. Holy Christ some Republicans in America have really, really drunk the Trump Kool-Aid. Ironic thing is he couldn't care less about them, but they throw themselves at him like he's the (orange) Messiah...or something.

How long until Trump starts pulling out all the belittling insults against his (supposed) ally?

The best he's got so far is "Ron DeSanctimonious". That's pretty weak sauce.
