Tory MPs have called for Dominic Cummings to resign after blaming him for the government’s humiliation in the Supreme Court.

 

Boris Johnson’s chief adviser has been the architect of the prime minister’s confrontational strategy in an attempt to drive through Brexit and could be forced to take responsibility for yesterday’s defeat.

 

One Conservative MP told The Times: “If there’s one thing that is 100 per cent clear after this, it is that Cummings must go and go now. It is entirely his failure and he must pay the price now.”

 

David Gauke, the former justice secretary, said that Mr Cummings’s position was untenable.

 

With opposition parties calling for Mr Johnson to step down, Mr Cummings, 47, offers a tempting alternative target for unhappy Conservatives. ...

The empire is long gone. They've got much the same as in the US with highly partisan media fueling the fire, whatever happens half (more or less) are going to be extremely unhappy, and it's going to be a long term problem for them. Politically worse than the US as there aren't two positions but three (hard, soft and no Brexit), and 4 (or more with SNP) parties competing, no two of which can form a stable majority government with any claim to have a mandate - nor are the polls indicating that's likely to change in a GE.

Stock up on popcorn. Possibly the worse it gets, the greater the chance that there'll be reforms to strengthen democracy.

I have a son living over there and it worries me what will happen to them. We can always pay for them to come back though. His partner got told on Monday that her job finishes on October 31 Brexit day, I guess that will be happening to a lot of folk.

I, along with 17.4M other British voters support what Boris is doing, Parliament (remainers) are enacting a coup against the democratically elected government. I laugh at the misinformation being peddled about leaving the EU but I can guarantee that no Kiwi would want their laws enacted by bureaucrats in Canberra, yet are surprised and against the British people that are sick of it happening to them via Brussels/Strasbourg.

Most Brits don't give a fig about the european government, judging by the voter turnout.

i see the issue of EU governance as one of the 'superset'. Do you think it is fair that someone in Marton should follow the rules set by someone in Palmerston North?

Should someone in Palmerston North have to follow rules set by someone in wellington?

I wouldn't mind following rules set by a government in Oz as long as I had a say in electing the people who set those rules. Which the brits do, if they can be bothered voting.

Don't forget those MEPs from britain also set rules which people in 27 other countries have to follow. 

If brits are so deadset against central government then let them have fiefdoms every 50 miles.

DS9: I have to disagree with your arguments, NZer's making laws for other NZer's is perfectly legitimate and as it should be. Also the MEP's only get to vote on legislation written by bureaucrats, they do not create it and if they vote against it, they'll be bypassed anyway.

You can disagree if you want, but do you have a rational explanation to do so?

In some cases what is best for me is not best for my neighbour and vice versa. But we work together and try to head in the same direction. Scale that idea up and you have central national government. A system in which those in otago live under the same rules as those in auckland, even if it means they can't marry their sisters.

That's a joke by the way.

I'm in favour of scaling up beyond national governments as I feel it's the only way we'll solve some of the world's problems. Of course this will be difficult when we have the idea of the nation state and with it 'patriotism'.

I just don't see what's so great about being English that the English think they aren't that anymore, and will be again when they drop out of the EU.
