There is no doubt that Lee-Ross is a narcissist and an adulterer. In parliament or general life he's hardly alone in that respect. I find it really unfortunate that his personal life has been dragged into this.

This is one of the slippery slopes that NZ political life has largely been able to avoid and I think it's been better that way. Attacks on personal lives has been a part of US politics for a long time and it's not been a good thing.

IMO he is clearly unbalanced and as I said before this is very sad for him and his family as well as for his former colleagues. He needs to be placed on some kind of leave until it is proven he is fit to represent his electorate.

Let me be very clear - it is his former colleagues who have made this profoundly personal rather than political. Bridges choice of wording with "embarassing" which was pretty clearly a signal of Ross' infidelities and then Paula Bennett going public with the married man stuff.

I have no sympathy for them. Ross is clearly a snake but he's been attacking Bridges on political issues not personal ones.

You're expecting people he has been taping and presumably threatening to suddenly play the ball and not the man? This hasn't suddenly happened in the last week, Ross has probably been brewing this for some time.

There's nothing new about MPs going rogue and turning on their party. Chris Carter did it to Goff, Winston did it to Bolger, Horan did it to Winston, it is nothing new. There is a pretty significant difference in the attacks on Ross and what other rogue MPs have been attacked with.

If it's illegal activity sure its fair game, but having an affair isn't illegal. Lots of MPs have affairs, large proportions of the general population have affairs and I'm certain that some people on geekzone are currently having an affair.

It's not something that needs to be in the public eye unless it effects their performance in their job.

He is erratic and all over the place. He has lost clarity to his life due to his own misjudgments and now he wants to bring down his former employer. I dont understand why his family and friends arent guiding more as he cant achieve anything going down this track.

I work with a few people like that, actually. It's not great, I tells ya.

Leads me to wonder what Jamie will do if he loses the by-election? Disappear into obscurity? He has certainly shot himself in the foot doing this.

Bluntj: I certainly am not one of Bridges fans, but he didn't deserve all this. Just goes how easy it is to destabalise things based on false facts. Clearly JLR has become very unstable for whatever reason and now we have our so called Deputy PM jumping on the band wagon.

Personally I don't see Ross as unstable. Ross has clearly been doing this kind of thing for a long time.

The key difference is he is now opposing a party leader for some reason instead of supporting one.

The electoral donation claims are a matter for police to sort out the facts. I would guess this all started when Ross was implicated in the Bridges expenses leak. Ross still denies being the source of that leak to my knowledge.

Given the difference between the claims made by JLR, and the reality presented in evidence by JLR, I'd suggest any claims made hence should be treated with a degree of scepticism.

He is the type of person that gives politicians the bad name they have in my view.

I am not claiming he is 100% responsible for this situation or that there isn't ANY truth in what he is claiming.

I was keenly interested in his big reveal. If Bridges had been doing the sorts of shenanigans with donations that JLR was claiming then he is finished as leader of the Nats, finished as an MP, and should in my view be looking at criminal charges. And justly so

However, having listened to the recordings and read the txts published in the media, I don't think that they remotely sustain JLRs allegations. I didn't hear/see anything that remotely smacked of hiding donations, or splitting donations to skirt reporting rules etc. It seemed like a pretty normal conversation between a party leader and senior whip - fundraising, dinner with a donor, and the need to weed out underperforming MPs. While the language was a bit salty, I didn't hear anything that sounded even borderline illegal or improper to me.

JLR has made fairly serious allegations, and he has to substantiate them. He promised to do so, but as far as I can understand the situation he hasn't. Unless he has some better evidence in his back pocked yet to be revealed (and he might have) I think he has fallen flat. I couldn't give two hoots about his sleeping arrangements. But it surprises me that someone who was a whip, and knows the rules, could make the claims he has without evidence to back them up.

Plus, give that he made the serious and damaging claims outside Parliament (without the protection of privilege), and then failed to back them up, I would hope that unless he really has some better evidence to back up what he alleged, that he is taking good legal advice on the defamation suits he is presumably wide open to now. If he had made those claims about (say) Winston, I suspect he would already be in court. And if I were Bridges, and if I were confident that I had done nothing wrong, I would be looking for a court ruling to clear my name.

I suspect Ross was expecting things to happen but nothing as big as this. Mind you though, he hasn't exactly presented any smoking gun of Bridges doing anything untowards re the donation (yet). I remember him saying somewhere that apparently he didn't record that conversation.
