Stand back Alpha Males, Judith is back !
Minister for Space
I think it means the large areas of the country that are currently unoccupied. It can't possibly mean outer space.

The "tax cut" is going to be funded through death.
They are going to scrap the smoke free initiative for the extra tax, and I presume to get more people to die early.
On the other hand they will be strengthening restrictions on vaping which as far as I am concerned is great. Smells like someone ****ed a box of donuts. If I had to choose, I'd take second-hand tobacco smoke any day.

If I had to choose, I would say no to both.
They KNOW tobacco is highly addictive
They KNOW smoking rates are much higher in the lower income demographic
They are funding a tax cut for the rich with the bad outcomes for the poor.
The tobacco industry must be overjoyed knowing there is no end in sight for them now.

I thought they were relaxing this too as a part of it? This is going to age well: https://archive.ph/SRPDV
I disagree with the amount of people vaping (I am also an ex smoker / vaper) but removing the smokefree target, banning vapes which is the thing I personally used to quit is just 20 steps backwards and idiotic: https://archive.is/iUBsa
This is one of many policies I'm personally really disappointed in.

Perhaps I shoiuld have added sarcasm to the fixing of Labour 2017-2023. Although its a frequent perception for some here
Ah I definitely read it without sarcasm, I guess I am too used to having the /s help me out LOL.
Counting on heavily taxed tobacco for long term stable or growing income to pay for tax cuts?
Really, your big plan?
This does not seem smart considering that vaping has been 'spanking' traditional smoking.
So tobacco income is on the steady decline.
Smoking also skewed towards older age groups, a group where smoking is killing its market fastest.
Vs vaping.
Though that does go to create costs in Heathcare and sickness benefits.
Maybe relaxing regulations on that other highly taxed item alcohol will help boost taxes.
Now if they had made Marijuana legal with appropriate tax?
So the referendum should have read.
'Are you for legalization of Marijuana and all the revenue going to tax cuts' Big tax cuts :-) .
Too late now.

I would be so down for that.
Mind you Nationals tax calcuator was like you can get up to $36 per fortnight and I am like.... rather the govt kept it cos that amount aint going to make a difference for me.

Yep, put that money into smaller class sizes for those with complex needs, the sooner and better we intervene, the less likely we will need all those expensive jail cells they seem so keen on.
"prevention is cheaper than cure"... and better yet, there will be far fewer victims.
Give them breakfast, lunch and tea.
Have a class size of 5 for kids with complex needs, including those kids who are well above average intelligence. So many prisoners are extremely bright, but they got bored, played up, got labeled as trouble makers, and its all down hill from there.

Yep. I applaud anti smoking and anti vaping. I an ex both. Ciggies tax goes up about 10% per year, thats an anti smoking measure but its also an easy tax.So now NZ retains that tax for tax cuts support? Govts come and go, they rarely make a real difference as the hard questions are not vote supporting. So they get kicked to touch. Not a NZ issue

We have the squeezed middle. But if you are single and lowish/medium/average income you get stuff all. $9 per week comes to mind. Who is the squeezed middle??? Families get supported and I am 1000% in support of that , but the squeezed middle infers a LOT of people. Its not, the lower portion are ignored, and these are either hard workers with no qualifications, or just hard workers with minor qualis. Ignored. If kids starting out, or older people with no qualis working get ignored, thats stupid. We need businesses they make the world go round. Cashflow is oil, it lubricates the economy. Businesses need workers otherwise they scream to a halt. But screw them at your peril.

Back in the day when I was in another profession. The Warehouse Manager John F was hiring. He asked me, I've got this ex crim applying. I said your call, if its turns to custard, no issue. The employee was excellent. Give people a chance. If they turn out to be thieves again, its not really a big deal unless its a new Porsche. But you give someone a leg up. In todays world of tech and "look at me", many values (not all or by all) are ignored. TBH if I was resurrected, id like to come back 100 years ago.

What if you resurrect 100 years ago and you are not a white male?
Looking at history, if you were not a man and white... you are in for a pretty bad time.

All Māori men were able to vote from 1867 and all European men from 1879
In 1893 New Zealand became the first country in the world where women were able to vote
Frederick Nene Russell, Mete Kingi Te Rangi Paetahi, Tāreha Te Moananui and John Patterson took their places as the first Māori Members of Parliament (MPs) in the House in 1868. Te Moananui was the first to speak, and he urged the government to enact wise laws to promote good, and for Māori and Pākehā to work together.
History got things far more right than we achieve today....

Im talking in general terms which I assume was obvious. But feel free to expand on that...
Health experts are labelling the new Government's plans to scrap smokefree legislation "vile" and "devastating".
The tobacco industry brings in nearly $2 billion a year in tax revenue.
And incoming Finance Minister Nicola Willis has admitted that scrapping smokefree legislation will help fund tax cuts.
Not a lot more needs to be said
In other news I read that tax thresholds are scrapped? July 2024 is safe but thats not an ongoing tax threshold adjustment its just a tax cut. 2026 was a tax threshold adjustment (subject to .... ) But thats gone. Show me the Money via Andrew O'Keefe, Deal or No Deal
