https://www.stuff.co.nz/politics/360915794/new-poll-puts-labour-well-ahead-national-and-box-seat-form-government

This is only one poll, and the numbers change over time, but if the opposition being 8% ahead of the government doesn't get them a little concerned - especially if this trend continues, well...

Meh, 2 weeks ago there was one that said the incumbents were 8% ahead so yeah, got to take individual polls with a grain of salt and just consider the trend.

Polls, well the game has not started.

I think last time National got $7M , ACT and NZF near or over $1M each to spend.

So the game does not start until they start spending that on the Ai driven social media monster.

Once you could buy a bit of influence and bend things a bit, now its lock stock and barrel up for sale.
We allow overseas companies with significant NZ presence (whatever significant means) into donation/patronage too.
Reforms to party financing and donations now make it easier for undeclared donations.

Every Millionaire who buys a passport, it just gets easier.
They could have just had a token company, or companies do it anyway.
Their lodge/hobby-farm, investment shell company probably qualifies.
That's without having to do any 'under the table' stuff.

We also rather than tougher lobbyist rules and standards, got secret keycard lobbyists.

Canadas rules are much tougher. Maybe why they are not already 51st state.

Two days ago with no media comment that I noticed:

Beehive: The Government has passed legislation which helps ensure future elections are timely and efficient, Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith says.

- Closing enrolment 13 days before election day to reduce pressure on post-election timeframes.

I really dislike that change. I struggle to find words to express it. NZ has always been a relatively informal and sensible country and that cutoff just goes against the grain. Plus many other changes including moving the donation reporting requirement from $5000 to $6000 because giving donors a break from inflation..

They must have realised, like in the USA, that late voters tend to be left leaning.

The elections are signaled months in advance, is it really that hard for people to organise their lives to fill in a form ahead of time?

I know as a country we like to use "ish" a lot - (speed limit, 100 ish, how long till we get to the beach? an hour ish etc), the problem with that is ish is difficult to define whats acceptable and whats not. Why does say 4km/hr fall in to the acceptable realm of "ish" but 5 km/hr doesn't.

Not sure if its written into the law, but I'm certain there will be people who will become eligible to vote between the cut off dates and the date of the election, so long as they are catered for then all good in my view.

Thanks for reminding us of the younger voters. Another left leaning demographics, that would be barred from last minute registration.

Why not enfranchise people who may have busy Gig economy lives, unstable housing, students transitioning to adult life while juggling exams, moving town for work and such?

We can and have done so with no huge problem.
We have overseas voting too, maybe we should kill that, and voring for those serving overseas?

MMP negotiations take longer.
Daily, weekly, monthly Government operations just tick along anyways.

Though it would be awkward if people saw that a constant hand on the tiller is not needed. :-)

Its just petty, for sake of a few days.

I know a better way.
What happened to truly galvanizing the electorate that you have great broadly supported solutions.
Get that extra few percent, for an early certain outcome.

Maybe its party's fault that it is so close, you need that last percentage point?  Look at yourself ACT.

You know an election is coming (though not the exact date) for 3 years too right? 🤷‍♂️

Noting of course not everyone will be 18 3 years before.

Bloomberg runs a major feature on the Luxon govt's luxury property purchase visa:

Most of the feature focuses on Waiheke Island.

Voting is integral to the whole ' we're a democracy thing' though isnt it.

Bearing in mind that many citizens are politically disengaged (whats the voter turn out rate?) , it behooves the state to do everything it can to facilitate a citizen to cast their vote.

In my opinion, that includes allowing someone who wakes up on polling day and decides to register and vote, to do so.

According to Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_New_Zealand_general_election

Last election turnout was 78.2%.

Yes, I still think Australia has it right: compulsory voting. Turnout in Australian elections is >98%. Yes, you have a right not to vote. But nobody can see what you do in the ballot booth, by definition, so if you don't want to vote then you can simply draw a cock and balls on the paper and put in the box. And if you absolutely, positively have to not even turn up because you think that somehow that will make politicians care about you more, you can still do it. Just pay your $50 fine and get over it.

Not really a Luxon government thing since it was resurrected under the 2020 Ardern/Hipkins Labour government but I guess at least they didn't cancel it and replace it with a smaller, more expensive one to be delivered later. Anyway - new Parliament offices, made of wood.

The main structural elements weigh 18.5 tons and are constructed on the ground then lifted by crane. They can do two in an hour and a half compared to 5-6 weeks for a comparable concrete pour.

Proof the Luxon government ministers directed (with, it must be said, their cooperation) the PSC to buy ads on Facebook attacking the doctors, nurses, teachers etc. going on strike for decent pay and safe conditions.

An email to PSC Commissioner Brian Roche reading "H i Brian Thanks for the email. The minister has her open letter going out tomorrow and yes, we are ready to release early next week. out of scope We will undertake some final checks with legal and integrity and confirm with you on Monday."

The PSC, along with every other government department, is supposed to be politically neutral.

EDIT: Wrong acronym, corrected, thanks @gzt.
