gzt:

TVNZ: Luxon also reiterated Housing Minister Chris Bishop's call-out to renters, urging tenants to negotiate with landlords after hearing stories of people taking "$50 to $100 off a week". "If you're someone out there in the world today who's renting a house, I'd just say to you, go back to your landlord, renegotiate your rates," the PM said. "I've heard a lot of stories of New Zealanders who've done exactly that and taken $50 to $100 off a week off their rents, which is fantastic."

Astonishingly, I'm still yet to meet a single person since who has had any reduction on their rent. Hell, I think mine is due to increase this year, actually 🤷‍♂️

Proof the Luxon government ministers directed (with, it must be said, their cooperation) the PSA to buy ads on Facebook attacking the doctors, nurses, teachers etc. going on strike for decent pay and safe conditions.

An email to PSC Commissioner Brian Roche reading "H i Brian Thanks for the email. The minister has her open letter going out tomorrow and yes, we are ready to release early next week. out of scope We will undertake some final checks with legal and integrity and confirm with you on Monday."

The PSA, along with every other government department, is supposed to be politically neutral.

That's wrong. The PSA is not involved. You mean the Public Service Commission - PSC.

The PSC is a weird one. I've heard the head of the PSC on RNZ and their response was very measured, more about correcting timelines and information that was put to them about how the bargaining process had gone and what was offered when, as there seemed to be some confusion and mixed messages from both sides.

Then I see stuff like this and I'm genuinely confused as to how an agency functions so differently to the tone of its senior leadership.

I assume the grass-roots staff take their apolitical positions very seriously, and whoever pushed the button on these campaigns was either on board with Roche or directly under this thumb.

Two news stories re Luxon today:

https://www.stuff.co.nz/politics/360926412/luxon-says-things-are-turning-around-state-nation-address

Luxon says ‘things are turning around’ - How long has he been saying that for now?

Doesn't seem like many voters are sharing his viewpoint (although that doesn't exactly mean they're flocking to Hipkins, either):

New Zealand PM was invited for Trump's "Peace Board".

Forget it. Hard no. Big scam.

Trump wants a "donation" of US$1 billion for countries to stay on the board.

I rather have ferries.

What a day!

First we have Luxon mentioning "fixing the basics" approximately 12 times a second during the state of the nation speech. Having spent two years doing nothing but blaming Labour and undoing everything Labour did, apparently now in the final year of their term they're going start delivering a few small straightfoward things like RMA reform. Nothing you'd later regret rushing. But also lest you think that Chris Bishop just might succeed in making a small scratch in the housing crisis, Mr. Christopher Imsorted from Remuera is back reassure you that no, we will not be intensifying housing, please vote for us instead of ACT.

Did you know that the Luxon government has saved every single one of you $5000 this year? I didn't. I can only assume my refund cheque got lost in the mail somewhere. It's too bad, it would have made a small dent in the increased tax I have had to pay ever since the Luxon government got in. I mean sure, I always knew RUCs were coming but I thought that maybe the best managers of the economy would do it right rather than just going for the cheapest, laziest option. Anyway I will definitely be emailing the PM to find out where it's got to. Freshly back from "working from home" for a week I'm sure he'll jump at the chance to assist someone who demographically should be one of his core voters.

And finally, Nicola Willis displaying a looser grasp on the concept of irony than Alanis Morisette by complaining that the governor of our central bank should have asked for political advice before signing an open letter denouncing a transparent attempt at political interference against the governor of a central bank.

In a similar vein, I might try asking my landlord to chop $100 off my rent, like one of those "many New Zealanders" he apparently knows who had this happen, simply by asking.

I wonder how far I'll get? 🙄

I don't know how he can think he's helping kiwis with the price of living.

Everything at the supermarket is still going up and up, little by little.

The only good thing to come out of this government (not really but close): Election Day set for 7 November.

Speaking to the Labour caucus at the party retreat in Auckland, Hipkins said New Zealand has a prime minister who thinks low-income New Zealanders are "bottom feeders" and that New Zealand is a "wet, whiny, miserable country"

Absolutely need to hammer on the fact that if you're not a bottom feeder then at best Luxon doesn't care about you one way or another. He's sorted.

Do we need a new all-purpose NZ politics thread?

I'd see how the election plays out first. He may win another term. He may not.

https://newsroom.co.nz/2026/01/22/luxon-splendid-optimist-makes-his-pitch-to-the-country/

Luxon called for continuity. Under National, the country would “stay on course”, and a National-led government would “keep building on the progress we’ve made”.

Labour, Te Pāti Māori, and the Greens (note the order, there) would “send New Zealand backwards again” – as opposed to being back on track, presumably.

With Labour, voters would get “the same team that left an ungodly mess”. The Greens have a “radical, left-wing agenda”, while Te Pāti Māori’s agenda is “separatist”.

He is quite the optimist, isn't he? Sadly he's not really convinced me to vote for him (yet).

Was shocked with how much car registration is now so I went back on previous years (Tesla Model 3) -

2023: It costs $102.90 for 12 months.
2024: It costs $106.15 for 12 months.
2025: It costs $135.84 for 12 months.
2026: It costs $241.59 for 12 months.

Tell us. How exactly is a 78% increase taking care of the cost of living?
