Just as well you have your face hidden Fred. All your posts will get you a place on Trumpy's hit list. tongue-out

Yeah - LOL.

I'm rather gobsmacked by Peter Dunne's "Open Letter to Mr President":

Apart from being oh so wordy (when a few telling Trump what he is can be accomplished in a few well-chosen words), it's so futile.  I doubt it'll go down in history like Ghandi's letter to Hitler (which commences with "dear friend" and finishes with a request for forgiveness) - but Trump's a few years (and probably many brain cells) short of commanding international respect as a tyrant.

What a cynical, grandstanding, clumsy, ungrammatical ploy to ride popular sentiment and remind his 500 senile supporters that they will soon have to turn out again to shore up his phony political party and his ambition to keep sucking on the public teat as a Minister for Life.

Fred99 in Berlin in 1989.
On the bucket list is to do the same to Trump's wall - if he ever builds it.

Why? Many countries have walls up to protect borders. What makes Trump's wall so special?

No need to be rude about folks who support someone you don't. At the last election Mr Dunne recieved 5,286 popular votes and polled 13,569 in his Ohariu electorate

The wall won't solve anything regardless of who pays for it. This is just more Trump smoke and mirrors. That is what makes it special.

I had a quick read last night, but still aren't entirely clear.

Can Trump order pretty much anything he wants with an executive order, and then it's up others to challenge whether the order is constitutional through the courts?

The wiki page gives a good outline, and examples of how it's been used (and misused)

I doubt that there are many who'd argue that use of executive order to desegregate public schools was "misuse".

I read that last night, but it still isn't clear to me what sort of things can't be issued as an executive order. I would have thought the pipelines and the wall wouldn't be able to be done this way, but yet he has?

The USA is now listed by The Economist's "Democracy Index" as a "flawed democracy".

“The U.S. president, Donald Trump, is not to blame for this decline in trust, which predated his election, but he was the beneficiary of it”

I would have thought so too, but both may still face legislative challenges.

I expect that one thing strongly in Trump's favour in dealing with congress, he can claim to have some kind of popular mandate - as he did campaign on building the wall etc.

I actually think the wall has become the butt of a joke. It's not really a joke. Although the wayTtrump talks about it makes it kinda funny.

In short, people living on islands don't get it. We just have a few naval patrols and boom job done.

For countries in Europe there are walls all over the boarders. It does sound somewhat funny to joke about some crazy madman who used to host a tv show and says a bunch of controversial statements somewhat regularly. But him and his team and his supporters truly believe they have an Illegal immigration problem. And they want immigration to be dealt with at the border entrances.

There's a draft executive order which would result in a return of the USA using torture.

If that's going to be on the list of orders to sign, it will (probably) result in very strong resistance from within the GOP.

At some point, there's going to be a showdown within the GOP.  I don't expect Trump to give up on anything - or to (be seen to) make concessions.  He's so far behaving as badly or worse as a petulant lying megalomaniac than even some pessimists expected.

Presented in the "(alt:) right" way, by inciting fear and justification for brutal vengeance, re-introducing torture could likely gain popular support - if not majority, then certainly a lot of loud and angry shouting.

I believe Trump can't build the wall as such...it needs Senate approval especially for funding. A lot of Trumps "exec orders" are really smoke and mirrors, but at least he is starting what he promised.

From the Wikipedia page for "Executive Order":

"It has been argued that a Congressional override of an executive order is a nearly impossible event due to the supermajority vote required and the fact that such a vote leaves individual lawmakers very vulnerable to political criticism."

Heads up all of you IT business people who travel to the USA every few weeks: I just saw on the news that Trump is considering new visa rules that would end the waiver programme for New Zealand. Instead you will have to attend a personal interview each time you go, which means a separate trip to Auckland for those of you who don't already live there. I sure hope none of you are Trump enthusiasts.
