Someone needs to put a muzzle on Judith Collins, or at least unplug her router. Having previously put her foot firmly in it with her irresponsible unverified re-tweet of fake news about the French age of consent, she is now doing it again by pointing trolls at the couple who just received the Kiwibuild home. Thanks to her the couple, who have done absolutely nothing whatsoever wrong, have had to close their social media accounts. Her actions are highly irresponsible and not at all what should be expected from a leader. I hope for the sake of this country that she never becomes one.

She put the focus on them, for example, the '204 countries' reference, and others took that as legitimisation to pile in. Twyford is a legitimate target. The couple is not. I think she is despicable.

To be fair, the focus was put on them when Jacinda, Twyford and the entire Kiwibuild circus decided to run a massive PR session with the couple on their new doorstep.

It wasn’t Collins who singled them out. It wasn’t even her that had a browse through their Jetset social media pages and thought it all a bit askew with perceptions about what Kiwibuild ought to be...

Collins did escalate it though.

Collins said: “204 countries – maybe doesn’t need taxpayer support.”

Get a life. This has nothing to do with them. They met the criteria.

Just maybe Collins is right. She retweeted from the house winners own tweet with a comment...I do not see the issue. Collins was not getting personal with the winner but the party that is spending billions of our dollars that is perhaps going to people who do not need it the most. It was Twyford who made it personal today.

I as well as Collins am extremely upset that so many billions of our money is going to building homes for people earning under $180k.

Collins wasnt upset at the couple, but the policy itself. Read beyond the media headlines.

There is no spending. Its 2 or 3 billion that guarantees the builders invoice, then its sold, the money rolls over to be used again. When its all done, and his 100,000 builds is completed next week, :-) the 2 or 3 billion is still there. Its just rollover cashflow so that builders and contractors can build as much as they can and not get caught by a failed upline business, as has happened in recent years. The couple don't get any of it.

How about we discuss the issues and leave the personal stuff at the door.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Whether intentionally or not, my point has also been missed. Because of what Collins said, and the way she expressed it, the couple have been made into targets. Either she did this intentionally, or she did it because she didn't see the consequences of her actions. Either way, it disqualifies her as a leader.

The couple have nothing to do with this. Whether they are international travellers or not has nothing to do with it. Whether they are professionals or not has nothing to do with it. They met the qualifications. If the bar was set too low, that is a matter to take up with the government. The couple have nothing to do with it. Everything else is fake news.

The dissonance is indeed strong, but it doesn't lie with me. Cheap shots are easy and don't mean much. Judith Collins is an unpleasant human being who should never be leader of anything. I have no problem making that assertion.

My comment to @reciprocity was entirely justified. He was trying to drag an innocent couple into the mud Judith Collins style by making a completely inappropriate comment: "Jetset social media pages". Again, the couple have nothing to do with this. It is a nasty and completely unjustified attempt at slander and you should be bright enough to see that. Normally you are.

I hope Jacinda Ardern does succeed in elevating the level of political discourse in Parliament. That has nothing to do with the discussions here. You are just reaching for things to bash me with.

I hope we are done with this crap. Let us return to talking about actual issues.

Exactly. Overall, this little exercise is highly illustrative of the utterly despicable personality of Judith Collins. To be honest, morally I think that couple was taking the mickey through applying for the KB house -- yes, they are legally entitled to do so but there are more needy people. Collins could have made a very powerful and frankly devastating point against the poorly thought out eligibility criteria (IMO it should never have been just based on one's income at any given period) by just doing things in a dignified and factual way. Instead, she chose to stir the mob on social media, when any semi-intelligent being (a class from which she is obviously excluded) would have figured out that she was exposing that poor couple to unpleasantness.

OTOH, it also shows that utter tone-deafness of Labour and their own advisors. Seriously, just a little back of background research and pre-event vetting would have told them that it was dumb to make that couple the centrepiece of the event.

As much as some of Labour's mistakes with Kiwibuild and other things boggle the mind in terms of their amateurishness, at this stage (speaking as someone who nonetheless intends not to cast a party vote at the next election) I still infinitely prefer this government (hopefully without the influence of the ever pathetic NZ First in the near future) to any led by this National mob. There's at least some kind of vision and willingness to look beyond the immediate reaction of the average idiot.

Any party that contains nasty neanderthal social conservatives like Collins, Bennett and Mark Mitchell will never get my vote. Don't get me started with Bridges -- I don't want some idiot who permanently talks like he is holding an excess mouthful of food as he is trying to speak blathering away as NZ's representative and without exception always failing to construct any kind of coherent argument.

I was doing nothing of the sort. You seem to be letting your hate for Collins cloud your judgement.
“Jet set social media” was a euphemism for the issue that was already getting plenty of coverage on #nzpol on Twitter long before Collins got involved.

I didn’t “drag” anyone into anything, I was just referring to the bandwagon that you were accusing Collins of leading.

But yeah, interesting so see that you’re happy to call for female MPs to be muzzled. I though that kind of rhetoric was reserved for alt-right misogynists
