So if the risk taker has a young family who relies on their financial and other types of support and that person dies or is grievously injured and requires massive and expensive (potentially long term) medical attention, would you expect the taxpayer to pickup the tab for that ?

Same issue if the risk-taker's parachute doesn't open, or she ends up with 2% brain function due to oxygen deprivation, except one cause is nobler than the other.

Reading this thread I am sure if the ABs lose to Wales next weekend it will be Jacinda Arnerns fault.

Wouldn't it? They certainly have not played well since Labour "won" the election.

(calm down I'm just kidding).

They are just trying to stress us all out and put the rest of the World into false hope for the next WRC (i hope)

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I saw an article over the weekend eviscerating Kelvin Davis for his lack of knowledge and Labours lack of foresight in leaving him in charge when JA and WP went on holiday together.

Yet another poor staff and management decision by JA in my view. Shows she doesn't really have a full grasp on the limitations of her staff. Grant Robertson was basically feeding answers to KD down a chain on the benches. (Before you get all defensive Rikki, go and watch the videos).

JA needs to get JD out of there, most people know why he got deputy, and now it's time for her to put people with knowledge and skill into the hotseat when she goes away. Grant Robertson seems the blindingly obvious choice, but KD would be about 8th on the list.

Fully agree, I could foresee that. GR is blindingly obvious, yes.

We had a small shake here the other day, that was probably JA's Fault...... :-)

Well, I know since the election I feel a little less inclined to get up in the morning, maybe the AB's do too :) As for the quakes, well, I'd like to blame Labour for those, let me think about it a bit more, I am sure I can find a link. :)

Did you miss it?   "Fault"  :-)

re Pike River, Its time we had the reports, in plain english that both sides based their decisions on. Its a pity when an issue that for a small few (families) turns into a media and regional bickering match. They don't really need that. What they need is closure, the memorial as mentioned here, but as I think you said, its all riven by grief, we dont really wanr to extend that any further

Haha good one re fault.

The National Government tried their best to put the thing to bed. Labour and NZF and the Greens kept it going, and have given the families hope and a longer timeline, and this is why I feel they should be held accountable (if it can not be done safely, or if something goes wrong).

If its defined as not safe then I agree. But we dont know anything as we have two sets of expert opinions, I think we all need to see the reports, then its doable, not doable and it can be put to rest, and whichever party is holding back the truth, be accountable

The thing is, if 1 report says it's not safe, another says it's safe. These are opinions based on the facts and interpretation of them by different parties (not just political). I don't think it matters that much what the report says, it's matters which party follows what report. If Labour deem the "it's too dangerous" is the correct one and don't enter, they have mislead the public, if they go in and someone gets hurt, they should be held personally accountable. If they go in and it's all ok and they get the remains out, it still doesn't mean that the prior party who decided any risk was too great, did the wrong thing.

Labour have put themselves in a lose-lose situation. National has very little to lose here, though there will inevitably be those who will say/blame National if a Labour authorised recovery is successful. There will be those (like me) who will say that Labour was reckless in recovery even if it goes well, because risking someone to get nothing (of material value) isn't smart. Feelings shouldn't count in a situation like this, as callous as I know I sound for saying it.

This isn't Labour bashing in this instance, it's common sense. I'll have SLIGHTLY more respect for Labour if they err on the side of caution. I'd also support a memorial using taxpayers money, to honour the dead, and a fund set up (I think there was already one) to financially support the immediate families.

I would *not* support a similar thing if they put together a recovery and it fails and the recovery agents get hurt or killed. At that point, I'd be looking for complete accountability. Perhaps JA and AL would donate their salaries to the families if that was the case.

The DIA project my wife was working on got cancelled as it was not in the "100 Glorious Days Of Our Leader" list - so as far as we are concerned, JA is responsible for that and the commensurate temporary loss of cashflow!

I sincerely hope they would resign AND be held legally liable for what I regard as a complete waste of money and unnecessary risk to life. What is the point of risking life to recover the dead? Surely the ultimate expression of pointless endeavour.

I am completely certain no-one in Labour would have the class to resign and no chance of them being held accountable. I'll donate $100 for each event to a charity of your choosing if it happens.

It has been deemed unsafe by a couple of high level Government Agency reports. The only reports that say it is safe are not in writing and conjecture by so-called overseas experts and Winston Peters.

Didnt Winston offer to go into the mine first without any more reports?
