I prefer to call the Mine Event a tragedy. It has been to court and no one really won. We tend to want to blame someone for everything...

The bodies cannot be recovered, they are skeletons now. It was said several times, that even if they could reenter the mine they wouldnt be able to get beyond the drift where it is estimated most of the miners died. To spend millions and millions more to perhaps recover a few of the dead who died this side of the drift is irresponsible.

The PM has now changed tact and is getting NZ ready for safety to be used again as a reason not to humanly reenter.

Labour and NZ First have used this sad event for political gain and now it will cost us all for probably no gain.

Id suggest election vote gain not political gain. They may well end up with a political backlash if money gets spend and it doesnt happen, or it becomes an ongoing saga for years, when an issue stops entry, then there is debate and money to overcome that, it may become a festering sore. And all the while, its a very unfortunate 7 YO tragedy. Things like this happen, but this wont go away. Far too much publicity still for what it was and how long ago it was. Its almost unhealthy for the coasters, living the disaster in what is probably a daily basis for some. Imagine if us ChCh people were still living the talk about EQ lifestyle every day. Not healthy

Never mind what it will become if they go in and 10 more people lose their lives doing it...!

How was it that 30+ workers worked day and night for many years with no explosion every Thursday?

Your point? The other equation is every income earner gets $40 per week for nothing

There will also be ongoing memorial costs to consider as well, roads and bridges will need to be maintained. I believe it should be put into the nearest town or where the majority of people who died came from.

I believe it was a subsidiary of Solid Energy, owned at the time partially by the Government.

It was never a subsidiary of Solid Energy. It was a completely private company, I think most of the shares owned by a large Indian Steel manufacturer. Solid Energy took over their assets after the explosion and they ran out of cash.

Went to trial he was found not guilty if I recall correctly. Families were obviously not happy, they think evidence to convict him was in the mine, however, you can't be tried for the same crime twice.

Didn't go to trial, the government declined to prosecute after his insurance company offered up a few million dollars in compensation. Then the time for launching a prosecution lapsed, The families weren't happy. The only court action has been the families trying unsuccessfully to get leave from the courts to pursue their own action.

There hasn't been any explosion since 2010. I think the last one was the one which prompted for them to call off the rescue efforts. I think a few camera probes have been put in down the shaft since then as well.

Not sure if that was rhetorical but the answer is "It's a mine. Underground conditions change over time."

A complaint about students getting $50 per week from Labour. Or it would have been us getting $40 per week from National. Same thing

My point was its been safe to work in for years. There was a problem caused by some error by someone, and it exploded. The mine is inherently as safe as it was pre explosion, once the cause or error would be fixed. The new risk is collapse off course, but its not a mine waiting to explode

I don't think you can say that categorically can you? Sure it's been safe to work in for years, but with the collapse and explosions etc, is it not possible new risks have been created? Gasses that previously didn't have a path into the mine etc? They deemed it not repairable for the sake of continuing to mine from it, or the cost was too high to make it safe. Same thing in my mind. It's either safe and people could remine it, or it's not safe and it shouldn't be re-entered ever.

Not remotely the same. One is taxing us and giving it away. The other is letting us keep more of what we worked for.

It is the same, its taxing us and using the taxes. Or giving it away, either to students or to us. Its a bribe either way. taxes should be used to run the place. Giving a tax cut when we cannot afford it is stupid. Giving assistance to students is not too stupid. Re "what we worked for" that all depends if the tax take is always more than what the Govt requires, and thats clearly not the case

Problem is there is no measure of success for that. I will be very surprised if students pass rates improve, or they turn out to be better workers.

I have a niece, a qualified nurse, who is training additionally for midwifery. She has passed all her exams, has worked in NZ as a nurse but is being refused additional support as she has used up all the support she is allowed and will now have to completely support herself as she continues her last year of study.

This requires her to work as well as be on call for deliveries which take an undetermined time, as well as study and pass exams. I am all for encouraging people to support themselves, however, I feel the system has fallen over in these type of situations.

There are no checks and balances in Labours education policies, it's a free for all lolly scramble.

The measure of success is quantifiable, that is the number achieving degrees and in particular going on to do advanced degrees and post grad something that was extremely hard under Nationals draconian and illogical tertiary education policies.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
