I hope so, however there may still be a number of p'd off, unvaccinated people out of work around by then who can't get jobs anymore because they're not vaccinated. That website that advertises jobs not requiring a vaccine has barely 30 vacancies listed on it.

Critics have cherrypicked aspects of court rulings on the Covid response - which saved thousands of lives - to wrongly paint it as illegal

In a judgment delivered this week, New Zealand’s high court found that elements of the country’s Managed Isolation and Quarantine (MIQ) system, the cornerstone of our world-leading pandemic response, were unlawful.

The decision dropped to a good deal of delight.

One well-known conservative commentator wrote: “So the courts have found the lockdown was illegal, the vaccine mandate was illegal and MIQ was illegal, so can anyone name a major aspect of the response that hasn’t been found to be illegal?”

That response is predictably mischievous - none of those measures were ruled “illegal” - but it typifies the response.

Perhaps the best-known of the conservative commentators involved wrote: “Jacinda Ardern has been found by the courts to have abused her powers by illegally preventing New Zealand citizens from leaving & returning home.”

That isn’t what the high court found, but accurate reporting is hardly the point.

When Brocket was due in the stand in the Blenheim District Court today, a voice from the public gallery said it "sounded like it might be my name", but at first she refused to budge from her seat.

"Don't file anything like that in this court again," Judge Ruth told Brocket as she then attempted to carve her own path through the court process, saying she had a right to claim innocence by the mere fact she was a woman.

Ah. Sovereign citizens, conspiracy theorists and just generally stupid people.

It is a great move. One of the best Mallard has made. The protest was an illegal occupation of Parliament's grounds. Prominent people who visited were giving tacit support to an attempt to subvert our democracy. Peters fully deserves to be slapped down for this. He is a private citizen and has no special privileges.

Stuff quote Mallard as saying, on Monday night, the decisions about trespass were being made by Parliamentary Security, not him.

Who exactly has subverted democracy? The only group subverting democracy was the Govt by introducing wide sweeping mandates and segregating society "for the greater good". Literally introducing wide sweeping laws with the intention of bullying compliance with what was marginal behavior at best (as has been shown by rulings coming out about the legality / enforceability of some of the mandates, the MIQ debacle etc).

Why was their occupation illegal and condemned yet the occupation at the land near mangere (Ihaumoto or whatever its called) ultimately negotiated to resolution by the Govt treated any different?

Just to be clear, I believe that the escalation of the protest into the cluster-fk that it was went so far past the line of acceptable, but ultimately it can be blamed on multiple parties -

The professional shit stirrers amongst the protest group, that rile up the crowd to get a response.

THe crowd themselves, mob mentality where quite normal people adopt a mob mentality and exhibit behavior they wouldn't normally do.

The Government - They could have shut down the protest early on by talking to them and engaging in rational conversation, but no they simply refused to accept any viewpoint that didn't go along with the narrative they were setting.

Mallard and his childish antics (turning on the sprinklers, playing loud music etc) simply added fuel to the fire for the professional shit stirrers and enabled them to rile up the crowd even more.

You either have the rule of law or you don't. If the government steps out of line, it is up to the courts to hold them to account, which seems to be what has happened. If you don't like government policy, you have a right to protest but not to shut down the capital. The protest was illegal when it became an occupation and it was a tactical police decision to tolerate it as long as they did, which had nothing to do with the government or Trevor Mallard. If you don't like this government, you can always vote for the next one. That is how our democracy works. I think it is a pretty good system.

The government properly identified external influences on this "movement". We don't need the government talking and giving legitimacy to alt-right, nazis and sovereign citizen movement stupid.

So what is your point? We should all be free to ram raid because some get away with it? If the law is not applied equally, that is an injustice. It is not a reason to tear off your clothes and go howling through the jungle.

I can think of at least three separate court cases that have been conflated with relation to this one shitty Gayford rumour; the Northland boat-on-the-beach case, Manu Vatuvei's sentencing hearing and the 'prominent entertainer' who still has suppression.

You'd think that there'd be some level of introspection after they get it wrong the first, or even the second time, but no, this garbage persists.
