Another opinion piece I noticed tonight re National getting rid of the ferry plan...but without a Plan B to fall back on:

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/tide-starts-to-turn-on-nicola-willis-over-kiwirails-cook-strait-mega-ferries-opinion/Y34AG3V6ZVFO7PPFS4KEMKHYM4/

What have they proposed instead, anyway?

It's not up to National to propose anything. It's now up to Kiwirail to come up with alternatives that won't explode in cost.

Also, comedy answer: probably tunnels.

It’s been taken out of Kiwirails hands and given to Treasury and the MOT to come up with a revised proposal.

The expectation that they would have an immediate replacement for a program they didn’t expect to cancel is amazingly unrealistic.

Couldn't find a Labour thread but looks like Robertson is set to step down as an MP.

Now confirmed. New Finance spokesperson for Labour is a former tax solicitor.

That's going to be interesting for Willis. I'm also interested in whether there is a marked shift in Labour policy as a result.

This was a topic for discussion around the dinner table last night while digesting the OneNews poll.  His lack of contribution over the last few months has been noticeable, almost dead man walking.  The Labour spokesperson at the CTU has had more to say than Robertson (almost its a case of "would the real Grant Robertson please stand up").

I'd speculate that the Hipkins preferred Prime Minister result was the nail in the coffin.  Before the knives come out and the pressure gets piled on Robertson to step in as the Leader of the Opposition he's pulled the jettison cord.  The cupboard gets more and more bare for possible talent and leaders.  Almost back to the days of Little and the ABC club.

thinkingtrex8848: I’m not saying don’t question, but there’s only so many times they can ask a “loaded” question or ask the same questions over and over again in the same 20 minute post cabinet conferences before regular people just get frustrated.

If you haven’t seen those or noticed the media behaviour I’m referring to, then please feel free to ignore my arguments.

I agree with everything you are saying, I’m just saying regardless of what GZers who I believe are fairly techie and at least slightly more critical thinkers than regular folks can see through politics.

Press conferences are for the benefit of the press to ask questions. If you are watching press conferences you should be prepared to see the same question get asked multiple times and avoided multiple times. The reason for this is the questions don't get answered or only partly answered so follow up is required. The point is to capture the answer to the questions, not for your entertainment.

Critical thinking requires the observer to be informed. Having a basic understanding of what you are watching means that you would understand what is going on, not complain about questions that get asked in a certain way for valid reasons.

If you can't take the time to get a basic understanding of the purpose of press conferences just read the coverage.

You reckon that the appointment process for vice chancellor was run in the period between a poll being released on Monday and the announcement on Tuesday?

It's entirely normal for a chunk of the ministry of the previous government to retire, being in opposition is difficult painstaking work with little reward. It's hardly surprising that large numbers of senior ministers retire after the election.

It happened with English, Finlayson, Joyce, Cullen etc etc.

This thread is

Christopher Luxon, New Zealand Prime Minister 2023

But in fairness you are correct. Same as National, zip/nada. Apart from Shane Reti who will despite his talent tow the party line.

It would be quite good.... if peeps can stick to the thread title. If you cannot support the thread title but need to bag last years thread title, that says plenty.

Ye has no faith. Fact not opinion.

Valid point.  Maybe it was internal polls, maybe its coincidence.  For a Uni thats been global searching for a VC for 8 months......

The reporting I’ve read suggests this has been on the cards for some months. What more is there for him to achieve in parliament?

I think it was clear he planned to leave when he dropped Wellington Central and became list only.  He held that seat a very long time.

Not disagreeing with you. I suggest you look at the large number of comments left my general public on MSM's media press conference uploads - you'll see they share the same concerns regardless of what someone on GZ thinks general public should do, they will still complain about the media repeating the same questions over and over and getting the same robotic answer from Luxon over and over again. I was just sharing that, not disputing the purpose of press conference.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean. Can you provide a link to one of these uploads and the comments?

Even though it was brief, I thought Luxon actually gave a nice tribute to Green MP Efeso Collins, who died suddenly this morning 😢

There are people posting on social media who are ignorant and/or stupid? Well knock me down with a feather.
