The Washington Post - Opinion: MAGA denialism on covid-19 is killing its adherents

today

Conservatives who wallow in right-wing media consume a nonstop diet of covid-19 denial and vaccine skepticism, so it should come as no surprise that they are much more likely to believe disinformation.

As a result, they are dying in greater numbers than their better-informed, Democratic neighbors, friends and colleagues.

......

The results are tragic. ...

And also slightly puzzling. If, as David Farrier says in his article, evangelical church leaders are money grubbing, real estate banking mini-Napoleons (I'm paraphrasing), then having your flock thinned out means fewer dupes to tithe to you, sorry, the lord every month.

Surely the rational approach would be to get the flock drenched so the large motorbikes, hairdos and pacific island holidays can keep rolling in?

The Washington Post - Opinion: MAGA denialism on covid-19 is killing its adherents

today

Conservatives who wallow in right-wing media consume a nonstop diet of covid-19 denial and vaccine skepticism, so it should come as no surprise that they are much more likely to believe disinformation.

As a result, they are dying in greater numbers than their better-informed, Democratic neighbors, friends and colleagues.

The Kaiser Family Foundation surveyed Americans on eight pieces of disinformation about covid-19 (e.g., the government is lying about the fatalities, vaccines cause infertility).

Its poll found, “Nearly half (46%) of Republicans compared to just 14% of Democrats believe or are unsure about four or more misstatements about COVID-19.”

In addition: “84% of Republicans believe or are unsure whether the government is exaggerating the number of COVID-19 deaths by including deaths due to other causes, compared to just one third of Democrats.” ...

"Belief in misinformation is higher among those who say they trust COVID-19 information from conservative news sources, with nearly four in ten of those who trust Fox News (36%) and One America News (37%) and nearly half (46%) of those who trust Newsmax for such information saying they have heard at least four of the falsehoods tested in the survey and either believe them to be true or are unsure if they’re true or false.”

The results are tragic. ...

Human nature.  😗

Covid denialism is killing people world-wide, NZ included.

Any organized Covid response that ignores the power of denialism is naive.*

Yesterday's "protest" in Wellington included MAGA denialists.

* EDIT: I am not implying that the NZ response has ignored denialism.

Radio NZ - Iwi urge Brian Tamaki to 'follow science' in fight against Covid-19

today

An iwi that Brian Tamaki descends from are calling him out to say he is putting Māori communities at risk.

This follows mass protests across the country on Tuesday organised by a 'freedom' group set up by Tamaki opposing vaccines and lockdown restrictions.

Te Rūnanganui o Ngāti Hikairo located between Kāwhia and Te Awamutu were especially concerned with the number of young tamariki involved in the rallies.

They said Tāmaki, who was one of their own, was asking Māori communities to undermine science, putting their people at risk.

They have now called on the Destiny Church leader to take a whānau-first approach. ...

Amen.

Sadly, I don't think he will listen. Brian does what Brian does.

The only shred of humility we have seen from Mr Tamaki, is,
him calling himself Bishop, not Pope, or new Messiah.
YET... :-)

Of course the stuff he spouts also means the congregation is
even less inclined to admit they are NOT CHOSEN OF GOD by seeking treatment for infection.
So attend their next super spreader event ?

While money collected by Destiny seems to go ?
( What would Jesus do, buy a new Harley ? )

Then there is are more that are less publicized of same ilk, drawing down big dollars in Government support.

I'm sure other Churches and Religions that care for their communities are doing various things too.

Northland did a very good thing kicking Matt King to the curb at the last election. He’s a rabid anti vaxxer. Now he’s hosting videos with Simon Thornley. What a clown.

Yet here's Judith saying he's "a lovely guy".

He may be "a lovely guy" but he really doesn't know much about coronavirus. And Simon Thornley? Spare me.

That's the problem. She doesn't come out and say the truth (not all politicians do anyway) but she seems to side more with lunatics (or do lunatics side more with her?)

The Greens to think Auckland should be in some sort of permanent state of lockdown until the rest of the country pulls finger:

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/300456826/covid19-nz-auckland-border-reopening-too-soon-say-green-and-mori-parties

“Aucklanders have been doing it really tough, but we have to hold the line to keep everyone safe while vaccination rates increase, particularly when so many of our vulnerable communities are still at risk.

“Labour is making a mistake by committing itself to opening the Auckland border before evidence is known about how the Traffic Light System is working and cases have stabilised,” she said.

“A date for opening the border should only be agreed once vaccination levels are equitably high, the traffic light system tested and refined, and regional health systems prepared.”

She said more exemptions could be created for those who had good reason to leave Auckland – but not holidaymakers.

High high is 'equitably high'?

American vaccine misinformation and extremism is infiltrating New Zealand (nbcnews.com)

Nothing that a well informed person wouldn't know:

"The researchers said the disinformation was “being used as a kind of Trojan horse” to coax New Zealanders from vaccine hesitancy to vaccine resistance and then to the embrace of far-right ideologies like white supremacy and extreme misogyny. Some of the most extreme content, they said, comes from overseas, particularly Australia and the United States."

At anti-lockdown and anti-vaccine protests in cities like Wellington and Christchurch, “Make America Great Again” hats and flags from the QAnon conspiracy theory movement are visible among the crowds. Sam Brett, a student at the University of Canterbury who attended recent protests for his doctoral research, said they felt like a “miniature, New Zealand version of a Trump rally.”

In my view, most anti-vaxxers are halfway to being racist, alt-right useful idiots.

IMO there are no vaccine hesitants now. Its been convenient to be "hesitant" but given how long the virus has been a part of our lives, and how long vaccines have been available, there are NO hesitants

I totally disagree. They cover the entire spectrum from the Kyle Chapmans to the crystal healing hippies.

I had to google who Kyle Chapman was. I wish I hadn't lol.

I would agree about the diversity of ignorance. A personal trainer I know is about as hardcore antivax as they come. He was a competitive lifter and used to shoot up steroids, which is undoubtedly more safe than a vaccine apparently.

I believe there's going to be a low election turn out in 2023. A not insignificant part of National's base are antivax, and there's a chorus of voices saying they are all as bad as each other. I'm just waiting for a new antivax party to register and get their social media content deleted again and again lol.
