kingdragonfly: I'm looking a one-off credit card number. Something that only works for one purchase, for a specific amount, and then is refused for any future attempt.

If you don't mind paying a bit of a surcharge, you can use Prezzy cards for this. Useful when buying stuff off Russian web sites, for example.

richms:

Our stupid new pin pad asks if the signature is ok on the customer side of it as well which they all just seem to press yes on without even signing things.

That's because the signature check is there to shift liability, not for security purposes, as long as the customer has indicated they've given assent it's all good. There have been experiments run overseas where people signed "Mickey Mouse", drew a stick figure or a smiley face, made an X, it all worked fine.

Acceptance of these cards are hit and miss in my experience. I've had e.g. overseas VPS providers refuse to accept Prezzy cards but accept any of my "proper" Amex/MC/Visa cards fine. Suspect it's due to some processing systems expecting the provided address/postcode/etc to match or something like that.

It's more likely because the card is a Visa Prepaid - they can tell this from the first six digits of the card number (the BIN, sometimes called IIN). Most subscription services will reject Prepaid BINs.
