I went from Movie Theatre on Queen St, to Dacre St, just off Upper Queen St, 1.3KM apparently, and the cost for that was $12 and change. Flag fall $3

Considering my wife caught a Taxi from Mt Roskill to Auckland City Hospital for $20, I am guessing not?

Was on a Meter, but when sitting at the lights, it was increasing the meter 10c every 8 seconds.

Wasn't Executive Taxi's or anything.

Whether it's reasonble or not will depend entirely on your perspective.

All taxi's list their per km and waiting time charges on the side so it's easy to compare companies. Meters are also calibrated and tested so it's highly unlikely it's wrong.

There are certainly huge differences here in Wellington, with larger companies like Wellington Combined being up to $1 per km cheaper than some of the smaller companies.

Well I have just done a bit of a search and found a couple of sites with many people complaining about the rates these Taxi's charge, so I won't be using them again.

Yes the rates are posted on the Window, but it's not always possible to know in advance exactly how long your trip will be and what impact lights etc will have on the price.

The car was a pretty rough looking vehicle and certainly didn't LOOK like it charged premium rates.

1.3km and you got a taxi on Queen street it would of been faster to walk it.

Come on man, that's hardly a walk! It's reasonable if they lost their place on the rank for such a small fare?

No it is not reasonable.  It might be reasonable if they had a sliding scale where they charged less if you went further but they don't.

Well I am struggling to understand how a 9Km trip to the hospital can cost $20 and 1.3KM trip costs $12, waiting time might make some of it... but still...

Anyway I emailed the company, not expecting much, won't use them again. Problem is that it's "bad manners" to not take the first taxi in the rank.

Walked it everyday for 2 years while I studied in that hell hole. Of course being a poor student puts a whole different slant on it but I was probably at my fittest then. The charge is the charge is the charge. If there was a lot of money to be made in this game then I would imagine a whole different socio economic group dominating the driving wheel. We all know the ethnicity of the drivers and the stories of immigrants with degrees that end up driving taxis so unless someone at the top is doing a Kim Dotcom then I would safely assume the drivers are not making much.

$20 from Mt Roskill to Grafton does not sound right to me. I think it would be much more than that. I regularly take a 4 km taxi ride from Auckland CBD to my home and it costs about $18.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

waiting time and flagfall.

If you have a flagfall of $3, then the journey itself only cost $9 for queen street, and $17 for the hospital.

the waiting time would also be significantly different.  I've never taken a tax for that journey, but often taken buses and it;s not uncommon for it to take 20 minutes for the bus just to get from wellesley st to Kroad at peak times.
whereas going from Mt Roskil to Hospital takes barely any time at all. Manukau rd then turn onto greenlane and the traffic is generally pretty smooth.

did you time the journeys?

She didn't by chance use one of our taxi vouchers did she?  If so, that'd explain it - the vouchers we give patients get a preferential rate (tariff 2 vs tariff 1 for a regular journey).  That's with Co-Op

i always use cheap cabs if i am taxing anywhere (unless i am in a hurry) if i am going from vulcan lane to st kevin's arcade (krd) it is normally between $10 to $15 depending on the taxi i get into, however if i am heading home from the cbd to takapuna, i will quote the price i want as i know what taxi's will do it for rather than sit on the meter and if they say no i say not a problem and move on because i know i will get what i want, and to note with cheap cabs i will get from CBD to Takapuna (esmonde road) for $20 if there are no cheap cabs around and im wanting to get home it will be either $20 or $25 depending on the specific taxi driver
