Hi

I have a windows 8.1 media centre which has a longstanding problem with recording free view that I can't seem to fix. Basically watching free view on all channels is fine, no pixelation, good picture. When I record any program's, whether I'm watching another channel or not, the recordings are unwatchably intermittently pixelated. I have tried various things. I have changed the hard drive I record too, I have changed from using hdhomerun to hauppage inboard card, tried multiple retunings of the media centre and nothing works. EPG collector tells me I have 25% signal strength, but my picture is fine when I watch. The box is pretty modern with an nvidia card.

Any ideas?

If the picture is fine when you are watching, press the record button and see if the channel begins pixelating. It shouldn't. If it doesn't, go back later and watch the recording and see if it pixelates when watching it via recorded TV rather than live.
Watch a pixelated recording on another computer and see if the problem persists.

The issue of pixelation in the recording but not when watched live is a very unusual combination.
If live TV wasn't working fine for you I'd say it's your signal quality at fault.

Without knowing more about what hardware you've got and what you've tried, it's hard to say. But I had success in this thread by disabling processor power saving/slowdown (AMD Cool'n'quiet) in the BIOS.

25% signal strength is VERY low for a Media Center in my experience. That may be your issue right there.

Hardware is a modern dual core, NVidia 9500gt, hauppague 2200 and a homerun hd. OS is on a small SSD and recording is to a modern 1tb HDD.

The aerial set up is new (im in a bit of a hole), professionally installed, with an injector and a powered amplifier/splitter. As I said, the picture is great off either the homerun or the internal card, as another pc also accesses the tv signal. Ill try the above tests when I next get home thanks, gbwelly.
