Ok so one of the kids has thrown something at the TV and cracked the screen. It has a spider type crack and a dark oval spot on the screen. It's been working fine for past few days but now it has shut down and has a red light flashing 7 times with a blank screen and no picture. A quick google confirms it is dead.

Model is a Panasonic Viera TH-P42ST50Z. This is a smart TV and was highly recommended when I got it. The picture was superb.

I need to replace this and please need some suggestions from my fellow geek zoners.

Requirements are 42", fantastic screen as good as previous, no smarts needed as we did not use as we have an Apple TV.

So a really good 42" dumb panel basically.

If you are still after a Plasma I have a 42" UT50 in a box I never got around to using.

If you kids are prone to that sort of thing, then I would suggest cheap as one of the main criteria?

Technically yes, but IIRC from the research I did when getting my ST50, the UT50 has very similar picture quality if you plan to use it in a dark environment.

There aren't many good 42" LCD television models on the market. Most people who want high end televisions want size about all else.

Sony's 42" model has 50Hz motion.

Samsung no longer produces 42" models just 40".

I'll suggest this one from Panasonic

it's available from JBHIFI for $991. Don't expect excellent black levels from it as it's an IPS panel but it's quite good for an LCD in other areas.

The only alternative is LG but as they've removed all but one of their 42" models from their website they're probably being discontinued. I'm not sure from their specifications whether they're 100Hz panels or 100Hz backlight blinking. At least one model does have an integrated Freeview Satellite tuner.

Ouch...I hear your pain. One of my kids did the same thing to my P42VT20 earlier this year. Fortunately, the P50ST60 was a really nice upgrade size and picture quality-wise, but new plasmas are now NLA, sadly.

Still, plasma is hard to beat for dark room blacks and motion performance - unless you want to pay silly money for OLED. Maybe try to source a second hand set, if you're after similar quality at a cheap price?

This from what I could tell in reviews, I have a 50ST60 also so I never needed to use the smaller one.

That is unfortunate but very common situation with kids playing and acidently throwing gaming console into the screen.
Kids - they rarely miss :-(

May I give an advice to parents:
a) - suggest kids using a strap - similar to those popular with old days mobile phones - so that when kids accidently loose the grip of a gaming pad - it will not fly into the screen
b) - if it has already happened - just PM me - I will thankfully collect broken TV from you - it is hard to discard rubbish that size and I am actually paying to get rid of it after I am taking few parts of interest from inside.
