And received a text - Broadband confirmed for installation by 7PM on 11 July (Thursday).

Wow. Hope the router arrives before then.

If you end up on DLM1 it's great - 1ms... If you end up on DLM2 or worse you could end up with higher latency than ADSL2+. Check out the thread from the Snap users. SamF has done a stellar job of pulling all the info together in the first post.

So I am all ready and really keen to upgrade to VDSL (already a Telecom customer) however I have some questions which I cannot find answers to elsewhere (google, geekzone, etc.)

I am in an apartment, and (thanks for michaelmurfy and the pre-qual check ) know I can get VDSL.  However I am told I need access to the 'comms room' in the apartment block.

This is where my knowledge starts to get murky.  I thought the master splitter required for VDSL would be installed at the point the cabling comes into the apartment (in this case direct into an alarm), but I am told it will have to go in the comms room.  Is this the same as putting the splitter in the demarc point of a house?

If the splitter goes there, how does the phone+data signal get to the apartment?  The cabling is all CAT5 in the walls (I checked already) but only 1 cable into the apartment.  Is it that 2 pairs are used for data and 2 for phone?

I reason I ask is that I need to know what changes/work is required in the apartment.  Is it just a new panel (phone+data) and the alarm be diverted so its connect to the phone side?

Ah didn't realize you had it going into the alarm panel first, in this case if there's a space to put the master filter there the Chorus guys might do it, it might be easier than getting access to the comms room of the apartment.

Sorry I should have noted that getting access to the comms room is really easy (I just ask for the keys).  Does it matter where the splitter goes?  Or is it better to have it near to entry point to the building?

If it does go near the alarm, does that mean the alarm+phone just feed off the phone side of the splitter?

The cable from the alarm goes currently goes back into the wall to the other side of the apartment where I have the phone+modem (with an external splitter).  I assume I can use this cable (in the wall) for the phone OR modem once the master splitter is installed?

This was all much easier when I lived in a house I could drill holes and and just add more cabling!!!

If you can I'd recommend getting the master filter installed in the comms room, what they'll do is use another pair on the Cat5 cable and set up another socket in your apartment. The job is very tidy so I don't think anyone will notice :) Splitters are supposed to be installed at the point of entry of the phone cable to the complex to reduce interference. Completely up to you what you want to do here, as long as it isolates your phoneline from the rest of the house it should be fine!

Shindig: This is exciting...

what work is required to change the telephone port to an VDSL one?

Sign up and chorus will sort it all out - install master filter, etc.  In an apartment it might be a bit more challenging though.

Funny enough I will be ringing Telecom today to order this, and I live in an apartment (Newmarket, Auckland).  I have OK ADSL speeds (12down) but I know part of the problem is due to high attenuation because of the cabling going into an alarm first, and the 5 jackpoints in the apartment.  coffeebaron fixed the cabling in my last place so I picked up a lot about what to do, and luckily the apartments are cabled with CAT5, so a Master Splitter before the alarm should yield nice VDSL speeds.

I notice its only $99 for the install, which seems like great value.

Anybody else in an apartment getting this? Or already has it (i.e. trial users)?

It's great to see this FINALLY released as I was working on this when I was working at Telecom last year.  Better late than never!

Yes well I tried just now and I am afraid to say TNZ is once again not ready. My address was not able to be ordered on the web site as usual. I called a mate in Chorus and confirmed the cabinet I was on was capable and the line attenuation was fine (got excited). Couldnt order online called contact centre, sat in queue for 15 minutes and was told cant order. Asked to "talk to someone who knew what they are doing".... another 10 minutes on hold. Finally came back to me and said "you are right you can order it" you need to pay installation fee. I said I paid $160 for an SDP last year I dont need another one and was told sorry you must pay for the connection fee. I said send out the modem or I will use my own and she said I cant. I said perhaps I will go to a competitor to which she replied you can so I am off then... after 30 years with NZ Post and TNZ I have finally had enough.

All customers regardless if they've got a master filter or not have to pay the $99 connection fee, this covers the chorus tech coming to your house to check everything out (I assume by SDP you mean Master Filter service delivery point?) and also covers the VDSL modem and everything in between. BigHammer was in the same boat as you, he currently has a master filter but sees value in this and even I will be if I got VDSL installed since I currently have a master filter, but still for better speeds it's worth it, you're getting a good modem and a tech around to your house to verify and connect everything. It's important we triple-check all installations to make sure nothing is going to get in between you and VDSL since from experience some customers have got a master filter but they could be installed incorrectly or the internal wiring heading to the SDP is shoddy which can degrade performance, or they "think" they've got a master filter installed but have not. Full wiring is supplied so the tech will install Cat5 to the SDP if needed.

As in the first part of your message we've only launched this yesterday to the public, most customers have ordered successfully and I've heard some awesome things but it sounds like you might be on the fringe of VDSL coverage, we are working on these small bugs and appreciate the patience from our customers in the process.

Cheers

Hi there,

No, nothing is wrong. As advised in previous posts, both the Telecom team and the team at Chorus Provisioning are very stretched today due to the volume of VDSL orders received. They are being processed in the order in which they are received, but there is a bit of a wait while the backlog is cleared.

Please be assured we will attend to all requests as soon as we are able to.

Thanks for your patience everyone.
