I rang Telecom today after watching my ping go from 200ms to 5k as the clock ticked from 8.59 to 9.00am

I presented him with the information I had received from NCSoft, the information that another mmorpg I have started playing solely because I can't play Guild Wars works just fine, and the fact that use of a VPN caused my ping to drop back to 600ms, (but this has started to DC all the time).

This time the guy admitted that yes, they are managing ALL traffic, and was not sure how I could play this other game, and that my only option would be to change plan. Which for me unfortunately is not an option.

So I guess I'm stuck getting up early and playing before 9. But I had to give the guy kudos for actually admitting it was their doing this time.

Excuse me, but is this still going on? I mean the "Telecom admits that yes, they are managing ALL traffic" surprise?

Telecom already said, from the launch that all traffic is managed. The Big Time product page is clear and says it at least three times. These are the first two paragraphs on their product page:

Big Time is a traffic-managed plan unlike any other in New Zealand. On this plan there are no data caps and no overage charges, it's just a broadband plan that lets everyone in the house use the Internet as often as they like - without paying a fortune for it.

However, because of this we manage all the traffic on Big Time. When the network is busy (generally inside the hours of 9am and 2am) you may noticed reduced speeds; in particular you are likely to see reduced speeds in relation to file sharing and online gaming.

What else is needed to people to understand the plan is managed before they sign up?

Newsflash: all traffic on Big Time is managed.

Now continue to flame.

Oh I'm not surprised that they are managing it all, just that every other time I talked to them on the phone they swore black and blue it wasn't them causing the issues. So it was rather refreshing to talk to someone who was giving it to me straight.

I was on Big Time for a day. That was enough for me.

I just arrived at my parents place and they have big time.
Makes me happy I avoided big time like the plague.

Its ok for light browsing, but anything else and a stoned snail moves faster.
Now suggesting they move to a cheaper plan since all they do is play facebook games anyway.

I have no complain! Its been stunning on a 12-19Mbps down and 1Mbps up connection. I do live a stones throw from a cabinet but I've got no issues at all with browsing, downloading, youtube, farcebook, twitter, tivo, xbox live or pc gaming.

Just lucky I guess.

Yes you are lucky. I have a similar connection speed (I'm 100 meters from the cabinet) and I can't online game at all. Everything else is fine though.

I don't think it matters how close you are to the cabinet as they traffic is all managed before it gets to the cab.

What games are we talking here BigMal, local stuff (nz) should be fine, World of Warcraft is fine, Playstation games should be fine, its a game by game basis we're resolving (where there is sufficient information available). The traffic management happens right before your traffic goes out of the country not before the cab, I wish we could have it there ... would be awesome.

Hi Doozy,

It's Madden NFL on the Playstation 3. It was fine when I first joined Big Time in August/September but I haven't been able to play since then. I run a NZ Madden gaming website (www.maddennz.com) but will probably have to close it because I can no longer play online.

I can play outside of peak times but during peak times I am unable to play at all. It fails to connect to the EA servers and kicks me out completely. My friends who are also with Telecom but not on Big Time don't have this problem. My PS3 is DMZ'ed etc so that's not the problem. The rest of Big Time's traffic management is fine but the inability to go online with the only game I play is a bit depressing.

According to the Madden user manual Madden uses the following ports for online play...

TCP: 25050-25059, 9980-9989, 14200-14219, 80, 443, 42100-42119
UDP: 9570, 3659, 6000

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

Odd, some work was recently done to identify ps traffic, seems very strange this game wasn't picked up ... I'll check into it

Thanks doozy, much appreciated.

Could it be the fact that it uses EA servers also?

If you change plans does your data reset to 0?

Thinking about changing off bigtime over the holidays. But i'm at 37gb until the 11th of Jan. Want to change to 20gb adventure...
