The 24/7 shaping thing is rather stupid and does not live up to what Telecom originally promised.

Has this been confirmed? As if they are shaping 24/7 then that goes directly against how the product was sold and what we all signed up to.

I don't think you will ever get agreement because everyone uses it for different things.

However, I do think p2p should be shaped the heaviest, lets be realistic, the majority of p2p is for downloading movies, games, tv programs etc. It isn't time critical so that can be shaped heavily during the day, let it go a bit faster offpeak but not to the point to upset late night gamers/voipers etc.. p2p should always have the backseat if bandwidth is low..

Sites like gmail/hotmail etc should run at full speed...
gaming should be nice and quick...
voip should be nice and quick...
http should be full speed (though not to file hosting sites like rapidshare etc)

im sure that is what telecom are trying to do but yes... its the problem of the people disguising their traffic etc that causes the problems.

are they really blocking game ports? cant really understand that...

Not true. As it currently says (and has always said, IIRC),

"we do manage ALL the traffic on it to optimise the experience for everyone on the plan. When the network is busy (GENERALLY inside the hours of 9am and 2am) you MAY notice reduced speeds" (emphasis mine).

While we know for a fact that shaping is reduced heavily between 2am and 9am, nowhere have they stated it would be removed completely. Also note that they state that they manage all traffic.

"During the not so busy hours of 2AM and 9AM, it dosn't matter where you're headed or what you want to do. Traffic management won't apply."

Sure that sentence is misleading, but in the context of the video the sentences before and after fairly clearly explain that traffic management will vary depending on how busy the network is.

Whether you call it shaping, rate limiting, management or prioritisation it is irrelevant - as long as (most reasonable) people are happy with the performance for the price.

The 100 KB/s shape on all international http downloads was extreme, good to see it was changed.

I would say they do seem to be responding to feedback and problems within a month or so, much better than the 6-12 months+ it takes for "some other" ISP's to adjust/improve things.

These past few weeks have been fairly good, however tonight I tried using skype's call functions and it was a horrible mess, it sounded like half my data was being lost in transfer. Hopefully this is an isolated incident. Online gaming and voIP are the main issues I'm seeing with this plan however, if they can sort those out than I for one will be happy.

On a related note, anybody know how SSH tunneling performs? I havnt tested it in two months.

I'm on a VoIP over aLaw now and have lost only 78 packets in the 48 minutes the call has been going for so far, so no issues for me

Big Time has always been sold as a 24/7 traffic managed plan.

Some of the media and press that Telecom does not agree with that statement. I'm sure that they'd like us to think that, but they've sometimes said differently.

Hi there guys,

I was on the Big Time Plan but changed back to Pro. Can someone please tell me what is currently happening with HTTP traffic during the day? i.e capped at 2mb/sec or does it seem to be uncapped? I want to change back but I need good HTTP speeds before I do. It's either that or change to TelstraClear or Orcon for me :-)

Well, I must be a glutton for punishment. I just went online and changed plans back to Big Time. I swore I'd never try it again but the latest decent reports on here have emboldened me. The caps on the other plans just don't work for me. I watch a LOT of streaming content and do a lot of work downloading (huge image files etc) so I am willing to try it again. I doubt this plan will work for me either (it has never performed well for me before) but I am prepared to be pleasantly surprised. If not, I'll have to look at another provider I guess...

I just blew my cap and am currently running at dialup speeds = not cool... =(

It is performing better than it was 2 months ago when we noticed the huge performance drop that forced people off the plan.

HTTP speeds are reasonable (2mb/s consistantly)
VoIP works
streaming works for most (YouTube is awesome)
Older games work with the exception of a few

More changes for the better are on the way. So...Crossed fingers all around :)
