tunafish: At 7:45 AM I had to reboot my router, my son was on the internet to 1AM (Uni student) he had no problems, so between 1 AM and 7:45 AM with no network activity except for my batch DSL modem sending a bit rate of 56Kbits to my home PC, and a bittorent download about 30kbits (max) the connection to my home was reset (Bigtime plan) my batch DSL is Explorer same Dlink router, both supplied by Telecom. General browsing is OK but broadband is about highdef youtube, watching top gear and stuff that isn't full of ads, but Bigtime doesn't even achieve this. unless you fire up 6 tabs leave for an hour and then come back and watch.

So, did you log a fault with Telecom or try a different modem? Or switch back to the explorer plan to see if the fault went away?

I would put money on your problem being a fault, as from peoples posts in here this is not the normal experience of Big Time.

Perhaps your router decided to give up the ghost around the same time. I've seen it before.

It looks like it is fixed, didn't change a thing, router didn't need a reboot this morning. I tryed some HD Youtubes at 4 am they don't stream, I still get that round spinning thing in the middle of the screen, maybe the cache hasn't cached the HD's yet.

You do know how the cache works i assume? Someone has to watch that video before you before its cached, if your the first one then its sloooooow, everyone else benefits from your patience and gets it from the cache at full speed. If your watching random stuff on youtube that know one else on big time cares for then chances are you are going to have buffering problems all the time.

paradoxsm: I don't use torrents but have found since changing to big time 3 days ago, my general browsing and connection speed has actually increased.

I'd def happy with it and it's a great time for it to come along with my recent cost-contraints, the fixed monthly fee is superb, if only they could now make the calling plan on Total Home longer than the standard max 2 hours per call "just in case"

1 hour 59 miniutes and 59 seconds hang up and call again

I used this video for testing.

Bring up task manager, and go to the networking tab and choose View, selec colums, tick Bytes per interval.

I sync at 7 Megabits, and on this video on Big Time which I know is coming from the cache, by Bytes per interval is around 400,000 jumps up around 500,000 then it's quarter buffered in a few seconds and goes down to 0 for a few seconds then picks back up again.

What does yours do? Does it sit at like 40,000 the whole time???

Yes tryed it at on the Red network it shot up to 1300,000 only took 5 seconds to load, is this good. I will try it at home and let you know.

I tryed this Youtube on my Telecom Big plan and got this info from HTTPfox

Which means it took 174 seconds to load is this good?

The flv is 7.2MB aka 7372 KB, over 174 sec that's ~40 KB/s. A bit slow but not unexpected at peak time on a managed unlimited plan like Big Time.

So when I do a speedtest and get 1.40Mb/s, and this Youtube is cached locally does this mean the problem is with the Telecom fibre, copper and routing infrastructure?, I guess this is why the Red network is so fast, it must all be new kit.

Without getting into specifics, if you are getting 1.40MB/s, then the "Telecom fibre, copper and routing infrastructure" is doing a superb job - and is, incidentally, quite new.

If you are observing 40Kb/sec on a youtube clip, then it's highly likely that for whatever reason, it is not being served from the local cache, or it is being served from the cache while it's being downloaded internationally.

I don't know exactly how the youtube caches operate, but there are a number of reasons why a video may not be supplied from the local cache.

The people able to help you resolve this situation are probably not here, you should call the Telecom helpdesk and log the issue. Even if it's a complex fault and they can't help you immediately, having knowledge of how many people are experiencing youtube cache issues will help in highlighing the issue internally.

Well I get up to 1.4 megabytes per second (on multiple downloads). So far I have managed 220 gigabytes, and no I am not making that up.

just want to clarify. 1.4Mb/s is NOT the same as 1.4MB/s

b = bit
B = Byte

1 Byte = 8 Bits

The speed from speedtest website is Mb/s. and 1.4Mb (megabit)/s is relaitvely slow for a BB connection these days

However if you are downloading a file and it is coming through at 1.4MB (MegaBytes)/s then that is very fast.

Thanks for the info, yes my speed is 1.4Mb/s, which as you say it is slow for BB, but I am a few k's from the exchange, my router indicates a sync a 2Mb but Speedtest only goes to 1.4Mb/s.

What I am finding is session time outs if I go away from my PC, long delays before pages load, and when my son is gaming his session gets dropped, this is what I expect a cache proxy to do when they get overloaded.
