This just keeps going around in circles.

I called again today to follow up on the interleaving. The guy said "It was switched off as on the 3rd of March."

Err. The guy last night told me it was still on. I have not noticed any kind of decrease in ping to anything at all. I was told that the order put through on my line was honored on the thrid of March. Even though I gave him a case number from the 10th. Reset the router just to make sure. No dice.

I think Telecom have their lines crossed...

Hahaha sound like you are having alot of fun, i am going to ring up sometime and get interleaving turned off too and see what that does, hope I don't have that happen. Just waiting to see if the ping issue reappears as if it does i can kill two birds with one stone.

Login to your router and look at its ADSl status page. If it's not complete ass it will tell you what mode its connecting as. Interleaved or Fast.

DravidDavid: Telecom gets points from me for taking a step in the right direction. I thought other ISPs would follow suit aswell. They havn't been as quick off the mark as I thought they would be.

Well if you look at the time and money Telecom have spent to get ready for Big Time, with massive caching servers, a local YouTube cache, massive and complex traffic priority and management platforms and with NeilR and other Telecom staff dedicating so much of their time in these forums and probably with helpdesk logged tickets for problems I can see why other ISP's, especially smaller ones have not jumped into the flat rate market yet.

I say good on Telecom for making the jump and spending the money, but I can understand why other ISP's have not done so, just look to the 75GB free offpeak at XNET which ground their network to a crawl for months, or other ISP's which have tried it. It's not a easy thing to be the first few to do it as you get all the leaches flocking to your services, I imagine once it becomes common for flat rate the second batch if ISP's won't have the problem with a concentration of leaches on their flat rate plans.

How about this for an alternative idea for a "Bigtime Plus" type plan. First x many GB per month are unshaped, then your shaped. Like existing plans that 64k you, but just put you in the Big Time pool after your first 100gb or whatever.

There has to be something you or I can come up with thats a commercially viable plan that meets the needs of people who want the safety of no data cap, combined with good performance.

That would technically be 100GB per month on the main-stream network. Switching to BigTime would mean being transfered to the other network, which is completly seperate and takes someone to manually switch you over.

No ISP I know of offers 100GB per month at the price of BigTime. It would be nice though.

It's a good thought, but the figure of 100GB wouldn't work... You'd be truly startled to know what that would cost an ISP to provide... In looking at another ISP, Orcon for example have a plan where you can have their base plan plus a 100GB addon (101GB total I think) and it's $129.95 per month. I'm unsure if Orcon have any shaping on that plan... But in any case, that's a base price BEFORE someone is switched to a shaped plan.

There are also practical difficulties in switching people on and off the shaping. While it's certainly possible, it's not really desirable to switch people between plans too often in terms of complexity for billing etc.

I'm interested to note that no other ISPs have yet tried to copy Bigtime. I really can't figure out why.. (I have a few theories - but I don't know which one is right :-)

Now THAT is an idea!

It would be a royal pain in the butt for Telecom though. If I could get even 5GB of on-peak VoIP traffic every month to a specified IP, I would be extreemly happy!

What codecs are you running?!

I'm running VoIP over BigTime with no issues.

What codecs are you running?!

I'm running VoIP over BigTime with no issues.

I am connecting to a Ventrilo server in the United States. They use the Speex 32KHz, 16bit codec with a quality level of 10. There is no way I can change the quality on my end for better performace. But I ping 50 to 28000 depending on the activity in the server and how generous the shaping is.

My friend has interleaving off and when I go to his house it is useable. So this is what I have been trying to accomplish for the past 3 to 4 weeks.

Question for you Telecom folks out there...

Is the robot lady (after calling 123) correct when speaking about account bills? It says I have 260 odd dollars due by the end of the month. But I don't see how that could have happened since we havn't made toll calls and download isn't capped or charged for. I figured it must just be a miss-reading or something. I will call billing tomorrow if I don't get a definate answer from this thread.

Does Telecom charge work done to my account? They better not have been doin' that! :|

Have you tried logging into "Your Telecom" and viewing your bill?

It won't let me log in with my broadband info. I have to make a seperate account I think. The way the website is set up is confusing.
