I have been reading back through this thread but as I don't really understand how all this works I can't really grasp whether this is a problem that is going to be fixed or whether I should give up and change plans, can someone quickly explain it to me in layman's terms?!?

I wish we could but the information we have received from Telecom is mixed and confusing. There was information about a hardware fault in the global gateway (the link from NZ to overseas that Telecom runs) but others have said it isn't that. Telecom haven't really said much.

So sorry I couldn't help me but there seems to be no concrete answer. It has been MUCH better for me in the past few days and I think that is a common consensus amongst most users, but some are still having issues.

I just tried TVNZ on demand and it was fine for me, but for others it is still an issue.

Yes it has been much better, a few more things ironed out and it will be better

We'll, ive just given up again trying to play Bad Company 2.

There is just too much lag. Frequent disconnects and huge delays seem to be the norm at the moment if the server is outside of NZ (just random DC's within NZ).

Nearly at the point where im gone.

Back when i joined this was advertised for gaming.

Gaming on local NZ servers on Big Time is fine.

I spent most of today playing Street Fighter IV and Company of Heroes against a friend who is also on Big Time, no problems.

Then played some Left 4 Dead 2 expert realism on the Telstraclear Servers, <20ms ping the whole time.

However playing on servers outside NZ is extremely variable!

eg: FPS servers based in Aussie used to be ok a month or so ago, however latency, jitter and packet loss seem to be fairly common now.

The extremely excessive shaping on ssl traffic seems to screw over any mmo players using tunnelling services to US servers too.

Maybe its Y2K running late.

Why does all this have to happen as soon as I start using Telecom?

Playing the likes of battlefield Bad Company 2 on NZ servers is very much hit and miss, I know of several people including myself on Bigtime who are having problems with this. The servers are based on Telstraclears network.

crazed: I find I can generally play fine on the ON3 - Powered by TelsraClear servers.. The older On3 servers that were hosted at iconz I believe were hit and miss, but I've heard they have all been ported to clear now, so in theory should be fine too.

Also: Yay dom post & I assume Claire (cant see a Byline line?) for writing an article on this.

hmmm so I wonder why I keep getting disconnects :( ON play on the ON3 servers, generally always the TCL based ones. Our Team actually has a BC2 server hosted in Sydney and I get a better connection to that server.

Also on a side note, for the Telecom staff that are here in what ever capacity, Would telecom do a Capped 40Gb plan? (Slow to 56k after 40Gb) Would change to the Telecom Pro but not happy with the $20 per gig charging.

Ah,

I too had thought that the speed of Facebook was an absolute crawl - I didn't realise it was so widespread. 3/4 pings to facebook.com time out. and I definately note serious lag. It's to the point where I prefer to use facebook away from home - that's not right!

Perhaps Telecom's feeling the pinch of everyone playing Facebook Zynga games.

Yes ON3 are using Clearnet Deluxe servers now.

The Clearnet Deluxe game servers that I've been playing L4D2 on fine, on Big Time are now also hosting multiple different games for ON3 including BC2.

You can see the list here
http://forums.on3network.co.nz/index.php?action=serverlist

Perhaps it's exchange backhaul congestion in peak time in your area?

Telstraclear and Telecom appear to be directly interconnected via global gateway domestic.

I don't think a direct national traffic like this would need to go through the Big Time shaping hardware (could be wrong I guess), what would be the point of doing time consuming DPI on traffic like this?
