Most of the time I view my emails on an iPad via the Yahoo/Xtra website (not an app). I keep getting these 'sponsored' messages - spam ads - which really PMO. I have hunted trying to find a way to turn this 'feature' off but can't see a way to do it. These ads are unsolicited and do not have an unsubscribe link so maybe they are breaking the law.

Is there any way I can stop this crap? Thanks.

You have agreed to advertising in the terms of use for the product. Not against the law.

Yahoo/xtra email is an Australian based service.
NZ Laws do not apply .

Just note, they will also be trawling through your emails, looking for keywords so they can better deliver more appropriate ads

Yeah, Sucks a bit..
Hence i use my own domain for emails through Outlook.com and i dont get any advertising material ETC.

Although it is being resold via spark, which is a NZ company if using an xtra address. But if it is a yahoo address, then yes it probably is a US or australian service.

I dealt with this same problem for a customer. There is a setting in Webmail settings (somewhere) that turns off advertising based on your interests. Sorry, I don't have access to a Xtra account to find it for you but it is there. Google may be your friend. The setting wasn't all that easy to find until I found the right page on Google.
