Our Thomson TG585 v7 is quite old, supplied by Telecom a few years ago. Our internet speed is poor but I've been told getting a new modem/router will help. Is this true? If so which one?
We can only get ADSL broadband where we live (rural Papakura) so I'm trying to make the best of it. Thanks.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

the TG585 is actually a very solid and well preforming modem for long lines, especially if your on a broadcom linecard.

ADSL or ADSL2? Hopefully ADSL2. Depending on where in rural Papakura you are you might not be able to improve your speed much, if at all. Do you have a master splitter installed, or just filters at each jack point? There is a good chance your internal wiring is contributing to your speed issues, although being rural improvement here could be minimal also.

Some parts of rural Papakura have access to VDSL now

When I enter our address into the Spark site it says we can't get any broadband!

that wasnt the question, are you ever likely to get VDSL/UFB? if so you might want to get an ADSL modem now that also caters for the other 2 mentioned technologies so you dont have to upgrade down the line.

check out the chorus map as mentioned, it does say if an upgrade is due

If you were able to supply stats from your current modem some members here may be able to help pinpoint where the problem lies. I'm thinking you may be out of luck though, to be honest.

That's the only good thing about it though.

The wireless was pretty bad from it. Have more then 4 clients on it the thing would restart. We had 5 replacements. They all did the exact thing.

Do post stats and if you don't have a master filter I'd look into getting one installed they're $20 if you can do it yourself or $150-200 (or if you ask nicely to coffeebaron he'll do it for cheaper just supply him with coffee) from a Chorus callout. Some modems can give better stats but generally most of them won't do any better. Modems just sync differently.

oh, i use it straight as a modem, bridged onto pfsense with multiple APs to cover house.. so never tried its wireless.
