Interference Crosstalk NZTelecom

On Sunday I received a call from the UK. One minute into the call there was an extremely loud “analogy modem” noise and I was unable to hear the caller. I hung up as I couldn’t hear the caller and the caller couldn’t hear me.

The caller, my brother called again. 2 minutes into the called the same thing happened. And again, this time the call failed and my brother reported a Samoan guy on the phone.

Again it happened again. We gave up.

I called TNZ. 10 calls later. It not a TNZ problem, speak to British Telecom.

So far we know;

No problem with local or national call.
House to local exchange checked by NZT and OK.
Single tele permit approved land line.

I suspect the problem is from the local exchange to the NZ gateway because;

1. the interference noise was extremely loud, so I’m guessing that it is close to me. I.e in NZ
2. I assume the Samoan guy was calling from NZ.

Is it possible that the problem is with TNZ?
And if so, how would they know where?

It's probably a Telecom NZ problem, by the sounds of your detailed description, however Telecom won't admit it & have passed the buck.

Is it still a problem? What was the weather like at the time of the attempted calls from your brother? From personal experience, there have been occassions when rain has affected the call quality adversely & also resulted in crosstalk.

Also, have you or your brother tried using a different phone from a different address? Sounds rather extreme I know, but if Telecom are denying any wrong doing, there ain't a lot of choice.

What detailed description?

How loud the sound is on the phone hardly consitutes distance. If that was the case all international calls would sound quieter than local calls - I ring my brother in OZ and he sounds like he could be around the corner.

Last I looked Samoans were allowed in the UK, and some of them even use the phone.

I thought his description was fairly detailed. I suppose there could be many reasons for the problem in hindsight.

One issue that hasn't been mentioned is weather "icecream's" brother asked British Telecom to investigate the problem. If both parties say it's the others fault (as can frequently happen) then we have a stalemate situation & no resolution to the problem as such.

Sorry to draw so much sarcasm from you, not really needed IMHO.

haha, here was me thinking your were going to provide me with a detailed technical rationale of the whole event. Needless to say, I'm disappointed. :-)

Thanks guys, I don't know what else I could add to make a more "detailed description". The weather was good???

I assumed that as the interference noise a louder that the phone, the interference was on this side of the ditch.

Statistically, it is more likely that a cross talk from the Samoan guy happened over this end than in the UK. There being many more Samoans in NZ than the UK.

Telecom have not got back to me. I'm sure there is a technical problem but hopefully it will be someone else from now on.

O.T. but I just -have- to know...

How many Samoans in each of the two countries?

The fault you are experiencing has a few different causes.
1) Physical contact between your line and another,.which would make fault apparent on both national and international calls.
2) A cordless phone, although unlikely you would hear a modem sound..
3 ) Or the fault is at the called parties end and could be one of the above issues.

You mentioned you hear a modem sound. The phone network does not have any modems on it therefore the modem is either on your line or your friends line. Again possibly a third line touching either parties line.

If the network has been checked and you do not have cordless pugged in then the fault must be with BT end. Possibly a toll provider issue, but very unlikely.

Hope this helps.

I had a similar thing happen to me not too long ago. I'd be talking on the phone then all of a sudden a modem would start dialing. I have BB and do not have any modem or fax plugged into my homeline at all. Strange I thought. The next day I pick up the phone and hello, there's a modem noise again. I pick it up again just to confirm then I use my cell phone to call 120, who claimed nothing was wrong (by this stage the modem noise had gone).
It happened again the next day so I kept on pressing flash on my phone to interrupt the modem and get it to hang up then waited on the phone for it to start dialing again, when It did I started asking who was there dialing up. Low and behold this guy picks up the phone demanding to know who I am.
Turns out he had just moved in down the street and the tech who installed the line to his house had plugged it into the same line as mine at the exchange.
120 got a bit of an earful after that - nothing wrong my @#$%@
