As you all know, most ISP's today offer unlimited traffic to certain sites, so after all this time why hasn't Telecom joined in the action?  Or have I missed something here?

To be honest I do agree with you in away.. the downloadable Content is quite expansive when you consider you can just rent movies from Fatso cheaper...

If telecom had free Youtube/TVNZ etc. then there would be a lot better Value for money.

Because it's a gimick. When an ISP can't compete on quality or price they have to find something else to differentiate themselves. Unmetered access to a few select sites is a cheap way to make yourself a more attractive option to a consumer. Telecom have other ways of attracting customers.

How has Telecom been attracting customers? You mean the lame data caps and stupid deals that only apply to new customers. Not really attracting to me. (Note to self September 7th is D-day to move.)

their data caps are pretty decent, in comparison, these days, and i only hear good things about the performance of telecom adsl connections...  i have told several people i know who are existing customers to call up and ask for things like free wireless modems  if they resign - everyone i know who has done that has been given one.

Uh really?  I asked for many things and been turned down many times,  I ended up getting a free wireless modem, but then had to call up and be on the phone for 1 hour just to tell them that it was a replacement and to refund me the $99.  Fun eh?

Read up on how the Wholesale UBA pricing is worked out, and what $ value the regulator puts on data in the calculation and you will have your answer.

I thought it would have been a no-brainer for internet providers to make exclusive deals with online content providers. Such as offering unmetered or discounted access to certain content providers (itune, fatso, overseas network tv).

It would have to be pretty compelling to offer something for free, when it still costs money to provide.

I think we should have a national data cap and an international data cap. and as for not knowing what's national or international, im sure someone could make a checker that you could put a url of a file in and it will tell you where the server is...

That minute you require the client to do anything extra the whole thing falls apart

How exactly? What you're suggesting is simply not possible in a way that wouldn't completely confuse the average end user.
