lucky015: I would say you are paying too much, I pay $120.60 a month for 120GB.

Not sure what you do with 120GB data per month, but with my requirements I'm paying only $5 to $10 per month more than with the only other service providers I think is worth anything.  And XNet is worth much more than $10 per month in technical support (note the word technical).  As an engineer I value good technical support and not how much I can get for as little as possible until the company goes under then jump ship.

If technical support works good users don't need to think about technical support...

Technical support goes beyond customer service, it includes ongoing improvement to the network and pro-actively preventing the customer from having to phone for support.  Prevention is better than cure.  Take for example how XNet is reporting bugs/improvements to Cisco and then updating your ATA firmware for you.

Speaking of which I must say voip sure has become a lot more solid and reliable than when I started using it. :) Good job, xnet. Makes my husband so much easier to live with.

Have a read of the thread and you will find that due to unforeseen delays/announcements from ComCom (not Xnet) they have had to delay the new plans until the new year.

Cameronn: We had hoped to introduce new Xnet plans for both copper and fibre this month but have been forced to hold off due to the Commerce Commission’s recent DSL price determination. Unfortunately the result appears to have increased copper access costs to motivate customers to move to the fibre network as it comes available.

This article dives into the detail of the determination and exactly what it means to the consumer - http://www.nbr.co.nz/article/telecom-separation-day-broadband-price-rise-%E2%80%9Cbody-blow%E2%80%9D-%E2%80%93-orcon-boss-ck-104958

If you're not interested in reading the article, in a nutshell the Commerce Commission has increased the copper access costs in urban areas and everyone is working out the impact.  Internet Service Providers that issued pricing prematurely to this determination may have to re-evaluate their offerings.  For example Scott Bartlett from Orcon has referred to the determination as a body blow.

Now that all of this is out of the way our bean counters are back in business and we'll hopefully have our new plans ready early 2012.

Cheers.  Bummer! :(

Seems like a bit of an odd move by the Com Com!!  It doesn't make much sense!

Except many place won't get fibre :(
Perhaps they could have duel pricing; cheap copper where there is no fibre :)

Yeah, but that's like saying:

"We want to sell more Audis so we're going to increase the price of Toyotas so that Audis become more attractive..."???

As if we weren't paying higher broadband prices than the rest of the OECD already!!

AND it's going to be YEARS before most people have fibre!

Hmmm. Not quite according to the Commerce Commission.

For standalone broadband, New Zealand’s pricing is not significantly higher than the international benchmark average for low and medium users, and is lower than Australia. This may reflect the competitive pressure for broadband services, including the impact of continued unbundling of local exchanges by internet service providers.

For broadband bundled with traditional voice services, New Zealand’s pricing is less competitive given the high price of voice services. This situation may lead to consumers switching to cheaper, digital voice services sold with broadband.

The report also shows that for residential fixed-line voice services New Zealand prices are considerably higher than the OECD average. The key reasons for this is the high monthly line rental charged by Telecom, and the lack of alternative plans tailored for low levels of voice usage. These factors reflect the limited competition in the fixed-line market.

In the mobile services market, the report shows that New Zealand’s mobile pre-pay pricing is significantly higher than Australia except for when the predominant use is for text messaging, where the price is lower than Australia and the OECD average.
