freitasm: Wrong conclusion. The Wellington server gives a low number because it's hosted at Citylink and there's no peering between TelstraClear and Citylink. This means packets travel a lot longer to get to the server, even if you are in Wellington testing against the Wellington server.

You will get low results in Wellington at any time of the year.

Actually it's worse (or at least, more entertaining) than that: the Wellington server is based in California if you're using TelstraClear (or Telecom). This is because it sits on the CityLink AnyCast platform, which for ISPs who do not have peering with CityLink, will be served from the US.

It's early still but I was able to stream a HD TV show from Netflix with no buffering at 8am for about 40 mins.

I must confess that I'm a bit confused as to why people are painting TelstraClear as callous, outrageous, moronic, illegal gits for actually TRYING to do, for once, what people have been clamouring for - "all you can eat" broadband.

Be careful what you wish for.

What some will come back with though is that an ISP providing All You Can Eat would probably have better allocations of resources.

But I agree with the gist of your comment.

ISPs can't provision resources based on peak demand, otherwise what happens with all those resources during non-peak times? Who's paying for that? The costs would be enormous.

On the other hand, the ISPs don't have a real world model to base their resource requirements on.

But... This "experiement" weekend is not even a valid model, because in my view people are actually using a lot more than they would normally, just because this is an unusual event. In effect what we are seeing here is the most demanding usage the network would be required to service. But not necessarily the demand an all you can eat plan would require in "normal" sense.

And there are those of us who are getting the inverse of a 'good, free weekend' where we can hardly do anything. So while others are enjoying the fruits of this offer the rest of us a suffering. I just wanted a weekend where I could actually play some online games and stream a few on demand episodes but I can't even do that. It is stupid, plain and simple.

What a terrible weekend for downloading I've had.

Went from downloading 1.5megs to downloading at 300kb/s.

That is yesterday and this morning, to a christchurch server.

The one below is to an AU server.

Not a happy camper!

dets00b:I think its just the people from your suburb leeching a lot , your problem is probably congestion on your node. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets congested at other times aswell, probably needs more backhaul bandwidth

I can guarantee to you now that backhaul will not the issue. The way DOCSIS works is the issue.

If you want to do some light reading check out how DOCSIS works. It's a shared access medium a across a node (not a auburb as there are around 100 nodes in the Wgtn region), and has a finite capacity, so if you have lots of people on a single node that are heavy users speed will be impacted. This differs from DSL which is not a shared medium.

DOCSIS3 improves on this with channel bonding which also greatly improves the maxium speeds that can be offered.
