I'm not sure you would notice much real difference between 130 and 100....but when you have access to UFB in your area, Vodafone will offer you a good deal to retain your custom.

...  presuming that they have dropped their current policy of refusing to provide fibre when cable is available.   undecided

They offer both now..but the overseas call operators still explain that UFB is the inferior product...(well they did a couple of months back).

They may offer both overall but they won't offer both if you live in a cable area where they will only allow cable (unless that has changed in the few months or so). Have you been told different?

To further add to the confusion, Vodafone currently offer "Ultra Fast Broadband - Cable" and "Ultra Fast Broadband - Fibre", and call both "UFB".  wink

Presumably they make more profit out of HFC cable, because they own the cable network (and therefore make no payments to Chorus).

This may explain why they push customers towards cable.

EDIT: Gigabit HFC cable may alter the whole ball game.

I am in a cable and UFB area and VF offered me either/or, but offered a better price for cable than UFB.

Was the "better price" lower than the advertised price?

?? When I switched to Spark Fibre and went to disconnect the Vodafone cable, the retention person I had to talk with asked why I was leaving Vodafone and I said its because I wanted fibre and they didn't offer fibre in cable areas. At no time did the person try and contradict that so wonder if its a new policy.

@MikeHales Are you able to confirm what the current Vodafone policy is? I notice that on the website it now says Fibre or Cable when I look up my address, but interestingly if I hit buy the website changes to Cable with no option for Fibre (that I could see)

I was offered either 2 months ago, and yes my new 12 month contract price is below what they advertise....as it should be....100/10 should be cheaper than 100/20.

I was offered fibre..yes( had to ask if it was an option)....I was an existing cable customer just out of contract so was a free agent and I desperately wanted fibre and to ditch VF after a very bad year of congestion and customer satisfaction. However, they offered me a good deal on 100/10 cable for a 12 month contract and I doubt I could tell the difference between performing cable and fibre.

Last few months cable has performed better than some of the UFB areas it seems.

He said he spoke to the retention team. They are New Zealand based and seem very well informed about what they can offer. They seem to be able offer things other CSRs can't. Maybe you should ring and ask to be put through to the retention team and then ask them.

Island Bay, node WKH, cable 100/10Mbps:

This is a final update to my posts of 09, 16 & 22 September:

It has been 4 weeks since node WHK was upgraded.

I have had full line speeds 24/7 on all New Zealand servers.
For Sydney, Melbourne, and Los Angeles I have had full line speed at least 99% of the time - at worst, speeds have briefly been in the low 90s.
Latency was normal throughout.

Here are my hourly TrueNet downstream speed stats averaged over the 4 weeks since the upgrade:

(note that the stats in my earlier posts were averaged over one week)

Now all we need is DOCSIS 3.1 smile

Have a look here: Vodafone gigabit service (fibre)

Spot the new word:

<snip>

In recent months Vodafone has also made considerable progress upgrading its ultra-fast cable network ‘FibreX’ - which serves customers in Wellington, Kapiti and Christchurch.
[VF Consumer Director Matt Williams said] “The $22million investment in our FibreX network has boosted capacity and paved the way for Gigabit services.
We look forward to offering customers in Wellington, Kapiti and Christchurch a compelling reason to upgrade to FibreX in the very near future”.

EDIT

More info here:

• Upon completion of the ultra-fast cable network upgrade, Vodafone’s FibreX footprint will cover Wellington’s central CBD and surrounding suburbs, and all of Kapiti.
In Christchurch the network will cover the central CBD and surrounding suburbs.

• Vodafone’s FibreX network is also known as a hybrid-fibre coaxial (HFC) or ultra-fast cable (UFC) network.

Vodafone set me up with fibre in a cable area a few months back, but I think it was an exception rather than a change in the policy. I was an ADSL customer (because of this thread), and did raise the policy with them at the time, but the customer rep didn't think it would be an issue. Fibre through Vodafone seems to be really solid (apologies to those still having issues with cable).

Quick update: no news is good news.

 - Over Wi-Fi.

Been getting near to full line speed at peak times in the past couple of weeks. Seems like the upgrade has taken effect.
