What about future shipments... when the days of cheaper iPhones could come in?

True. Perhaps they thought they could avoid "being dealt with" by Apple if they pull off an impressive launch? Say, if by some miracle, Vodafone NZ sold out the IPhone nationwide over the coming weekend, I'm sure Apple will forget about this "tiny hiccup". Apple probably don't really care how we feel as long as we keep pulling cash out of our wallets and handing them over the cashier at Vodafone stores.

Perhaps after you buy a $1000 iPhone  (which is already pretty close to prepay prices in non third world countries) you might be interested in signing up to one of Vodafone "you choose" plans.

I was thinking of signing up to a "you choose 20" plan with my 1st gen iPhone. Compared to my monthly prepay spend its not too bad. Until I realized there is a 2 YEAR contract. WTF. I have to sign for 2 YEARS and they dont give me anything for free? UNBELIEVABLE what these guys get away with.

Apple don't forget.  Ask Nvidia.  Ask ATI (at different times).  Ask Rogers Wireless.  Ask Motorola.  Ask IBM.

Steve Jobs is not a forgiving guy, and this permeates through the ranks.  He is fanatical about appearances, and Vodafone's so far has been amateurish, and shoddy.

I put good money on the fact that the higher ups at Apple see the John Campbell interview that aired tonight.

Foo: Thanks for posting that clip from Campbell. It was absolutely fantastic to see Campbell make a dog’s dinner of Mark Rushworth. While I don’t need/want an iPhone, I am pretty disgusted at the pricing VFNZ have adopted. It will be very interesting to see how this all plays out and whether Voda will drop prices or add on other freebies to entice users. I wonder how many they will sell over this weekend!

I also don't get the deal over the actual cost of the device - surely it's the iPhone plans that have the biggest cost repercussions to the consumer? I guess that it could still be an issue if you weren't on an iPhone plan and instead opted for a You Choose plan.

Im looking at doing the second option.

Keeping my existing plan etc.

Im on the Mega  plan. I have 3 best mates, 200 vf2vf minutes, 22 other nz line minutes, 2000 texts, and if i want data, (which obviously I do), for $10 less than the iPhone plan (and 50mb less, though) I can get 200mb data.

Mega plan = $40
data  = 30
iphone 16gb = 1100ish. (or maybe 999 from Tosh. Good ol' Tosh)
So yeah, intial cost? Pretty ouchy.

Plan wise, definitely a better way to do it. THAT I can justify better than their stupid "iPhone-friendly" plans.

Or aka legalised raping documents.

While not a complete solution. No need to resign my contract :) and only $20 if I want to exit I contract (Maximum 45 :P)

BTW, does anyone know where I can find the early termination fees for the mobile broadband plans? Seems they have moved it out of sight, go figures..

I certainly hope so. Laughing I really do feel sorry for Mark Rushworth. But I have no pity for the head of Marketing of Vodafone.

For that matter.. How do you KNOW they saw it?

Common sense I think tells me they would watch it, however, I would have thought closer to the release date, you know, probably around thursday or friday. Not Tuesday..

I ran the numbers...

I pay Vodafone about $40 a month at the moment. If I buy an iPhone 16GB without a contract (from Tosh, which means roughly $999 GST inc), it works out to about $2679 over 2 years, if I add on the cheapest VF data plan.

= (70*24)+999 = 2679

Subsidized cost:

= (80*24)+786.38 = 2706.38

Not a massive difference, though I'd argue an extra 50MB on the iPhone data plan isn't worth the extra $10/month. If the $699 on the VF website is GST incl. then the VF option is cheaper by about 60 bucks.

Of course, the advantage of the former is that I'm giving VF the finger, and I am free to cancel or change my plan at any time, if, say, Telecom has a 3G network.

So that's what I'll do.

My work will be buying all of us (10-15) iPhone's 3G as we are a big Apple IT integrator, and one of the bigger Apple resellers. My iPhone's screen is cracked, and bits of glass are flacking off, so I am actually genuinely hanging out for one. :-)

The biggest thing for me is getting e-mail on my phone, and Visual Voicemail, the first I can do with a 2G phone, and I hear even though we have the most expensive plans in the world, we don't get Visual Voicemail.

I've just changed jobs, so still figuring out which way is up, but I'll be interested what price we can buy them from at Renaissance wholesale.

Funny that, I've just changed jobs too!... ;-)  (no early morning starts either!)

My work are also buying us iPhone 3G's, (20+) and we are a big Apple IT intergrator/Reseller, but I've seen your iPhone, (and I was impressed it still worked so good after mashing your screen) and you need a new one badly!

Word is, Renaissance aren't selling them, they are coming into NZ via Brightpoint, and they supply everyone else.

Anyways, glad to have ya back from LA dude! (thanks for the peanut butter m&m's, YUMMY)
