The main feature I like was being able add and remove Sky channels with out having to ring Sky. That may have given me hours of my life for other activity. My wife really likes the catch up TV features. She is going to be so pissed, hmmm I wonder if Auckland needs me up there for a few weeks to sort out issues.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Why not just offer a generic firmware to turn this into an Android box?

Wil Vodafone still be reselling MySky?

Can you expand on this? What counts as a 'Vodafone retailer'?

Anyone who purchased via an official retailer of Vodafone products: so Vodafone branded stores, Noel Leeming, The Warehouse, PBTech etc.

We're still working through the details.

Can’t wait to see all these boxes clogging up landfill lol. Wonder what the media backlash on this will be given the current landscape with environment and so on.

we had one each in the kids bedrooms for non-smart TVs, would like to see a way to flash them to android but I doubt that’s gonna happen.
Bit of a shame as it was an all in one system that worked well most of the time, although in the future if I look to purchase other devices I certainly won’t be getting anything that one of the large global companies hasn’t produced, no need to support smaller players f they are likely to pull support unfortunately

I brought 3 of these STBes a year ago and they have worked well. On the other hand I have found Freeview also works well with Kodi with the right addon. I would really like to see some firmware to reflash these as Linux or Android boxes to run a suitable Freeview app on, such as Kodi.

Will this have any effect on the Freeview streams at i.mjh.nz?

I spent weeks writing the vodafone tv reporting when I was at sky. Every type of report you can think of including media rights (inhome, out of home, can record/save, can't record/save etc), dead air etc. Fun times :P

Hi, we stopped reselling MySky a year ago, so we no longer sell a TV set top box product.

In terms of getting a replacement service before VTV stops later next year, we anticipate the best replacement will be Sky's recently announced new box that will be available next year. So we recommend you keep using VTV until the replacement options become clearer.

Ha! It certainly exposed the complex world of media rights and how the studios slice and dice them.

I would be happy if they released it via firmware as an android box because it’s solid and doesn’t overheat. I hope they consider this option.

The last android box I bought is flimsy plastic and heats as soon as it plays for a short time so it a shame that such a solid item will be relegated to the scrapheap.

People have no idea, "yes you can stream this tv show on the toilet with wifi..... BUT ONLY ON WIFI...... NO 4G/5G"

Kind of lucky in NZ however as media companies tends to buy full rights for streaming.

You realise the operative word in Freeview is 'Free'? If you lookup the opposite of free in a dictionary you will find the definition of Sky TV. I'm sure that:

Any new Sky box will not be a free exchange for the VTV boxes we already paid for.
Watching Freeview channels on Sky TV hardware will not be free, but will include some form of Sky TV subscription.

Different design but indicates android TV could be available? rather than a linux version

Or If they could just add a M3u playlist player on the front end menu, and an official vodafone tv playlist address embedded that would access the current Freeview streams that are available the same way the Smartvu devices access Freeview..

Sure its nothing like the current offering but a dumbed down stream witha simple menu is better than scrapping 100000 units for those that dont want to buy some other replacement

Probably plenty of linux free m3u player out there.

In the FAQ, it does say that Vodafone will provide a pre-paid courier return bag for the old boxes, which will then be recycled.

Into Vodafone TV - new edition perhaps....

@sansom I feel it would be a good PR and damage control idea for Vodafone to run a collection and managed disposal of these devices so they are dealt with appropriately.

Sky wants their new box in every home and they also want to SELL them. So Freeview will probably be the bait. The Vodafone TV was the best NON pay Freeview unit due to the high quality streams and easy 3 day rewind. Not the weak Free streams the smartvu devices use.

Like chalk and cheese !
