Yes, they should advise users of potential resets when a problem is reported. A factory reset seems to a common baseline for problem-solving when there are any number of unknown user changes. If that is what they are doing then there is a good chance that it fixes nothing.

Yes, the danger/hazard from not backing up a router configuration is usually very low. But the common practice of in general not doing back-ups is a high-risk behaviour.

saving me 10 minutes of retyping is not really what i'd call "high-risk", it's a couple of screens of gui entries.

and if they had to factory reset it to get it to work then possibly me restoring a backup might break it again. who knows.

but would have been nice for them to ask first.

Those of us with more complex router setups can easily be hours of fine tuning..

I would certainly place it in High-Risk, I have Two routers, one image on standby for backup and one actively in use. Both are backed up and synced daily.

Having to reconfigure all the vlan, routing rules, firewall rules, queues and all would be horrible.

That would appear to be another good reason not to use the HG659.

I looks like this except that it's charcoal grey (very inconspicuous), and there is no technicolor logo on the front.

The power supply is a 12v wall wart.

Interestingly enough, the Vodafone CSR for my 58 minute marathon had never seen one. Apparently his interface to it says it has 4 Ethernet interfaces - he was surprised when I said there are only two. Someone else pointed out to him that there were several thousand of them on the floor below him, so he was on a mission after the call.

Here is my TC440, and my lovely little Mikrotik RB750Gr3 ...

I looked to see of Google had a photo - but the devices are too new. Did find this interesting article, about the only other consumer deployment of DOCSIS 3.1 (I'm told): https://www.wired.com/2016/04/comcast-offers-fiber-speeds-coax-thanks-new-modem/

Has anyone got this connection with pfSense as main router? I believe Im going wrong with VLAN tagging. Ive set in GUI VLAN 10 at priority 0 but starting to read might have to run some commands to get it working.

Can anyone else sheld some light on this before I jump into ssh please?

I do and ended up being pretty simple once I worked out what was needed.

- Select DHCP under the WAN interface

- Make sure you have no DNS servers configured under the DNS Server Settings and have the DNS Server Override box checked

- First thing you need to do is create your new vlan 10 tagged interface under Interface/ VLANs. Make sure you select the WAN interface as your Parent Interface as shown below

- Update your wan interface to select the vlan 10 interface you created

This should be it for you to get it up and running. Just make sure the default rule to allow outbound internet connectivity is in place and you should be up and running.

I've ditched my pfSense machine of about 10 years, because it only had one gigabit Ethernet port. Unfortunately, I turned it off, so can't be specific about settings, but I am sure you will be able to configure this from the excellent GUI!
This is what I would look to do:
* Create a new interface on VLAN 10, priority 0 (as you have done). DHCP network address, bound to your WAN interface.
* VLAN 10 becomes default gateway.
* NAT rules need to send traffic to the VLAN 10 interface. (I think this will create corresponding firewall rules.)

Please PM me if you don't have a solution later today, and I'll fire up my pfSense machine again and post more details, but I would think someone else will be able to correct and expand on this brief note.

No worries mate, we are all a pretty friendly bunch here :D. I might copy my post over the thread Steve pointed to as well in case people go looking over that way.

Another thing to add, I have tried a few different alternatives now to replace the HG659 as I had to turn off my Fortigate firewall as it was barely scraping 600Mbps and its just at its limit. I did build a pfSense box using an older MATX all in one thing I had and it wasn't really working so I gave up on it and borrowed a Mikrotik RB1100AHx2 and it was maxing out at around 750 - 800Mbps as well. I then grabbed a spare HP PC i had kicking around (Core i7 2600, 8gb ram, 4 port intel gig pcie nic) and set it up and it worked so have been using it since. If this had failed, I might have looked at picking up an Ubiquiti ERL as people seem to be getting reasonable results with it.

The only difference between the HP box vs the custom was the method of install for pfSense, I used a USB memstick installer on the custom box and used a CD on the HP box so I may revisit it at some point as the HP box is just purely overkill!

Speedtests are actually better than the HG659 on the current pfSense setup and I have seen as high as 950 down on it. I am running Snort and a few other packages which has not made a difference in throughput at all.

This is what I got a couple of minutes ago, not bad considering on a day like this, I would assume a lot of people would actually be online.
