I work for a "Photocopier company" and we have known for several weeks that Vodafone was having trouble with their email servers so today's Stuff announcement was no surprise to us.

Our concern is not with receiving email but sending it (Scan to Email via Vodafone's SMTP servers on port 25)

There will be many customers with older MFDs who will be unable to scan to email because the old machines do not have encryption (SSL or TLS)

There will probably be sales opportunities for us but we expect a lot of agro from customers who will blame us - not Vodafone.

@yitz, with your mention Gmail and false positives in one sentence, brings to mind how often various mail washers actually blacklist anything coming from Gmail. A major hassle with one client who deal with several big spending international clients who use Gmail accounts.

@Jaxar, as I've received nothing from VF with respect to the impending change, I'm unaware of any forwarding that you've mentioned. However you make no mention of outgoing messages with the current @ihug address. I'm not sure I know of any providers who would allow SMTP relaying. If they do, I've never been called upon to set it up.

Further question since you have a VF bias, will we Vodafone users be getting a discount in our subscription for a loss in what is a key service?

This is perhaps the kick I needed to migrate off ihug.co.nz but im not looking forward to calling VF to set up forwarding for the one or few remaining companies I haven't remembered to update my address details for.

WHY CANT WE CHOOSE FORWARDING IN THE WEBMAIL settings ourselves !

(There isn't even an option for auto reply).

Dont get me started on how Im also not looking forward to calling VF about my mothers account either.

By the way, what happens to our logins and details on file etc???

Why am I being told via media (wouldnt this have been better communicated by email specific to this)?

From my recent experience with BigPipe I strongly recommend them if you are considering giving VF the boot.

Switch UFB provider to Bigpipe with promo code UFBSWITCH and get two months of UFB free!

That would definitely take care of the early out of a 12 month contract.

Be careful if you accepted the $300 joining credit I have read you need to pay a pro-rated portion of it back on top of the early termination fee.

Your login details are used for other services (e.g. accessing the Internet, My Account, etc), so will still be retained.

As for being told about it in the media, it seems that they did a test run with vodafone.net.nz addresses earlier in the week (see start of thread), decided there wasn't much public backlash, and then made the announcement this morning. I suspect they went to the media first so people didn't ignore an e-mail that would otherwise look like a phishing scam. It would also be prudent of them to put out a press release rather than get reports from customer's about the service shutting down.

Yep it's real
https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/industries/96631562/vodafone-to-ditch-email-after-failing-to-beat-technical-problems

We still have some Clear email addresses.  We have 65+ parents who still use it also and it's gonna take a while before their friends update their email address.  Domain etc isn't practical for them.  But .. down the road they could still turn it all off so forwarding isn't guaranteed.

I know some who still have a Clear.net account on dialup that haven't been used, so have an account but nothing to pay for years.  Just wondering if those customers, email forwarding will work.  Because on a month to month basis they are not paying.

PS.  As a Clear.net email address holder - I didn't get an email.

Yeah I at first thought it odd that people are hearing about it from media first. When I have a question like that regarding a company however I work from the assumption that the company doesn't want to stuff up. A company then has 2 practical options for releasing such newsworthy customer impacting info. Official press release first or customer contact first. Pick the first option you may get some customers who are annoyed that they did not hear about from the ISP first and have the empty inbox at the time of press release. Select second option an media hears about it almost immediately without an official press release and gets details wrong. Most customers are not sitting there watching their email addresses for an email form their ISP and hear about it via media first anyway.
I don't have anything to do with those decisions but the above is the reasoning I would use if I had to make that call.

SMTP relaying I don't know anymore 10 years ago when I was heavily involved in domains for ihug I know I had it working but email landscape has changed drastically.

As for a discount I don't see anything about that on the page VF put up about it. https://www.vodafone.co.nz/email/ That's where I am getting any info about this. Somebody working in a front line capacity would probably be able to answer that more helpfully. My day to day work means I don't really have contacts in that area anymore. Heck I saw sbiddle's post hear about the change before I noticed the internal message. I would guess the press release, internal commms and you heard about it at the same time give you said it was 11:30am.

Final note. I just got an email telling about one of my addresses which already alias to my work address.

Please note: I have a professional bias towards Vodafone.

Just out of interest.  Some ISPs no longer issue you an email addy now - do Vodafone still issue customers one?

If mail forwarding works.  Are still able to use desktop MS Office Outlook to pop the email?

@goosey Apologies, you should receive an email within the next couple of days, which will contain a personalised link to create forwarding for each email address you have.

@rayonline You should get an email Monday.

Any other questions, feel free to mention me and I'll address them for you.

@rayonline - No new emails being created. MS Outlook will need to pop the email address you're forwarding to.

Thankfully I only know of one person who uses Vodafone for email, and I convinced them to move to Office 365 recently and bought a domain - just in time :D

Rob how are those configured?  We can likely put a router in front of those units to just drop mail into a mail server easy enough and just trick the device to think it's still talking to the same thing?

Who determines whether it is detrimental or not? From my perspective it is.

c. Changes that have a material detrimental effect:
i. In the case of a change under 8.1.a.i or 8.1.a.ii, we will give you one
month’s notice wherever practicable or otherwise we will give you at
least 10 working days’ notice. We will communicate with you
individually by email, post, bill insert, bill message, TXT message or
any other individual communication.
ii. If you are in a fixed contract term and you show us that the change is
material for you, you will have the right to either terminate your
Service or change Plans without any early termination charge or
transfer fees, if we go ahead with the change.

While VF has reserved the right to make changes to the T&Cs, these are how they stand at the time of the announcement. I'd be prepared to test it.
