Hello,

I was thinking about whether I should get a new router; one that supports VDSL and thought I would post something up on here.

I have been a happy Fusion client for some years now and was wondering whether anyone knows if WXC do any subsidised pricing for existing clients to move onto their MP264 router?

If not - what is a reasonable cost effective (wireless and VDSL capable) router that would be recommended (I already have a Cisco ATA so don't need to worry about that)...from what I can tell the cost of the VDSL devices still seems to be excessive; at least for what we might be able to get out of it, as we are not a massive user household which is moaning about speed issues all the time :P

Is it worth shelling out the coin for the newer device?

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I bought an Asus DSL-N66u to replace the cheapo VB104W that Slingshot gave me when I upgraded to VDSL.

Aside from the feature set being wider, the WiFi being much better and not having to restart it every few days, a little tweaking with the settings boosted my downstream from around 30M/b to 42ish without any seeming loss of quality or reliability, which I was pretty chuffed with.

That said, it is a relatively expensive bit of kit, especially without AC wireless, but if you are looking for an all-in-one box with VDSL2 compatibility you aren't exactly spoiled for choice.

I actually had an Asus DSL-55u previously which served me well, and on that basis I decided I trusted their router kit enough to splash out for the upgrade.

No regrets!

Do you really want a VDSL modem-router?
You may get more flexibility with a DrayTek Vigor 130 (with latest firmware) and an Asus RT-N66U router.
I use both and have had no problems.

I am more of a set and forget type user; so having lots of functionality across different boxes probably isn't for me, plus I hate having multiple boxes when one could do the job (clutter is evil)...hence the first ideal was to see if favourable pricing (for the MP264) would come from being an established customer of WXC.
