Hi VF staff / existing cable users.

Some quick questions (potential customer in the future here).

1) Is it in my right to demand the VF cable connection terminate where I need it to?
- I have a dedicated coms cabinet in the garage.

2) Does the telephone use VF cable or a Chorus copper pair?

3) If the answer to 2) is VF cable, will the technician wire the home phone line from the master BT jack to the coms cabinet?

Current setup is line in at ETP to master splitter.
DSL goes to modem in coms cabinet, phone to master jack.

I think I can answer 2. I've had both VF cable tv/internet and phone as well as Chorus naked DSL live into a premises simultaneously, so they are separate in at least some instances.

Just to hijack your post a wee bit while I'm here, if a Vodafone staffer could answer my question at the same time that'd be great :-) I've been looking at moving my parents onto Vodafone purely for cable as they are not getting UFB for years, but can't see anything on the website/packages about the costs of a second copper line. My parents have two lines and would want to bring both over. Is that doable, and if so how much, and why can't I find it on the website :-)

1) Yes, Assuming you pay for it, or pay the difference if it is standard free install, Standard free installs are intended to be offered including the minimum work possible to get the connection into the house. (Providers do not care how your house is wired the job is to connect the house to the network not to complete wiring inside the house how you requested it)

2) VF cable uses its own network, Wiring inside the home will depend on what is present and can be re-purposed.

1) No. There is an upper limit to how far from the street they will haul HFC into your property to connect. Once it was 70 metres above ground, no idea what today's limits are. If it's close to the pole and easy to connect, I can't see why they would say no though - getting a job done faster and quicker is always appealing

2) TelstraClear overlaid a classic POTS phone network wherever the cable network went. Classic POTS reflecting it was done in the 90's. It's a seperate network not owned by Chorus etc. Check what Voice features you want though, as although most worked identically, they are not like for like identical in operation.

3) Tech will connect the VF (TCL) Copper pair to the master socket, but that was usually done because master socket was accessible close to the street. if they accept connecting to the comms cabinet - and I'm not saying they will, I can't see the issue (a lot faster than crawling under a house thats for sure).

Thanks for the replies everyone.

The VF cable (ETP or whatever the grey cover box is called) connects to the ring foundation.
The requirement would be for the cable to be run through the vent, under the house and through to the garage.

Total length would be about 10m or less from the ETP.

Master jack (and also the only BT jack) is in the kitchen about 7m from the ETP.

Not willing to have the cable connect on the other side of the wall where the ETP is, as that is a bedroom.

EDIT: Actually wiring the VF phone pair to the existing ETP where the chorus line comes in, would be much easier than to the Master jack.

for a new cable point, id say yes, UNLESS THE SALES/TECH GUY IS A DICK, i had this issue a while ago wanted the grey box by the garage and a end point in the far end of the house. NOW my current setup is excedding the RECOMENDED total length of cable as stated by vodafone best practices. as they located the grey box at the far end of the houyse and i PAID the $50 relocation fee to have a new point located in the garage, this new run is baciscly doubling back on its self.

Well this is what my situation looks like.

Requirement would be for VF phone to link up at the location where the master splitter is.
The cable needs to get to the home distribution cabinet.

I will have to have a chat to sales I think.

Say do door to door sales or any sales dept do better / special / custom offers different to that offered online already?

I think having a chat to them is the right way to go. They might be able to give you an indication of what's possible, but ultimately I expect the approach to the install will need to be confirmed on site by a technician.

FWIW our house has VF cable wiring connected almost as you described. The wiring comes in overhead, down to a VF ETP at the base of the cladding, then in through a vent on the ring foundation. The VF phone wires split off from the HFC right where they're cable hits the house and runs to the Chorus ETP (rather than to a master jack) from there. However, unlike in your case, our VF cable and Chorus phone lines both come in overhead right next to each other.

Update:

Our flat is getting 100/10 cable on the way.
Will keep updated on how the install goes.

Was reassured cable will go where I need it to go, else if the installer refuses I can cancel at no cost.

Should be fairly straight forward anyway, there is a vent next to the cable ETP and cable just needs to be fed in there.
Copper pair to the phone and cable to a port in the wall where router is.

Ring foundation too, so should be no hassle feeding the cable under the house.

You will likely find that it's up to the technician doing the install for you and if they think it is not a time consuming extra job/over the wiring length limit which AFAIK still is 70m from roadside, you will be fine. I have had and seen many jobs and have not yet seen a tech refuse a reasonable request.

I've found that if you are willing to help the installer run the cables that can help seal the deal.

I wanted cable installed in the opposite corner of the house to where the cable enters, but offered to crawl around under the house and feed the cable to the installer, and he was cool with that

Definitely well under 70m from the road.
HFC: ETP --> Vent --> pulled through existing nail-in clips --> Cut out in jib and terminate in whatever coax port type is used (F connectors?).
Phone: ETP --> Vent --> pulled through existing nail-in clips --> through hole at phone and Chorus line in ETP.

Max 10-11m each.

Install should be a piece of cake.

Will give the installer a hand too as I am a certified cable installer myself.

Summary:

Install went really well.
Installer was really good to talk and work with (gave a hand to get it setup).
Speed is good.
Latency better than what we were achieving on VDSL for both international and national.

I was under the misconception that as the install of fibre at our home was free I would have to accept whatever plan the site visit person came up with. This is not the case you do have the final say.

Originally the fibre was going to run in conduit piping under the front gutter of our house and the tar sealed drive to the home dug up. Eventually it was put along a back fence with minimal driveway digging required. Mind you it took 5 months to get the job done due to discussions on the route taken. I presume you should have the option to say where the VF cable goes as well.
