I used to have the old HG630 connecting 2 computers via wifi at 130Mbps ... streaming an SD video never jitters, streaming Full HD Video, might have a very long pause after 1 hour, sometimes resuming sometimes can't resume.

So I asked about N/ac wifi routers and someone said the HG659 is so bad don't get one ... and I said it can't be that bad, think of it as a Mitsubishi vs BMW both are ok ...

2.4GHz - b/g/n "May be unable to negotiate to 40M" so at N speeds it connects at 150Mbps
5GHz - N/AC the N connects at 300Mbps, the AC connects at 800Mbps (could be a limitation of my laptop)

so both computers connected, one at 300 one at 800Mbps, with some wood (definitely no bricks or concrete) between them. The only electronic thing that is on is a heat pump and a Tivo, and some chargers.

streaming anything it pauses for 2 seconds every 5 minutes without fail
tried to transfer an 8gb file (between 2 SSDs) max speed is 10MBps (ie 80Mbps) ....

yikes! ;p

Will do more testing ....

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

with no wooden wall between them (only MDF cabinetry) getting 19 MBps this morning. distances around 3m for the ac laptop, 7m for the N laptop.

i am sure this is inconclusive, no controlled, could be other factors, but the SD video stopping every 5 mins was certainly different from the other old router ... :D

just some information for people who might be looking at buying the router cheap on trademe.

taken, i have no chance to test the gigabit LAN, but that could be ok. don't have 2 devices with gigabit ethernet ports, only 1. wish i had 2 ac devices to test.

I assume this is the 659a? Aka the Vodafone Version or the 659b? Spark Version?

Haven't had that many issues using my 659a

the white vodafone one. if you transfer one large file between 2 computers on wifi can you get above 20MBps?

PS perhaps i'm expecting too much? hmm ..

I regularly get over 20mbit between my media server and my surface over Wifi.

I use gigabit ethernet mainly and get around 700Mbit transfer speeds (The drives are the bottle neck)
