has anyone managed to get on warp in wellington?

reason i ask is i was told there is no capacity add me to it; and when i mentioned this to another friend of mine he said as far as he knows it's actually only available in the christchurch.

instead of relying on rumors, i'd like some concrete.

while i can accept that there would be temporary reason why i could not have warp i've gathered from Telstra's answers this is more permanent solution. they have no upgrade plans or anything. i was not told in the future i'd be able to get on.

they also gave me another contradicting answer stating that demand for warp is low, so that too means they dont see a reason to upgrade. how can that be true if they have no capacity?

(not getting on warp because of GB cap as i only use about 30GB a month, but because i'm used to faster internet than 10M)

also having been a customer for about a year i've noticed an overall speed dropping. anyone else noted this? maybe telstra has uplink issues and for whatever reason wont like to upgrade yet.

There are certainly plenty of upgrade plans for the network including a move to DOCSIS3 that will enable speeds of up to 100Mbps.

yes, i would certainly also expect so. (i've worked in the telco business for close to 2 decades; naturally, prior having moved here)

however, none of the replies i've gotten from telstra indicate any of this.

"The reason behind the decision not to upgrade your service to the WarpSpeed plan
is simply because we do not have the network capacity to do so."

"Unfortunately the WarpSpeed plan does not have enough demand to justify an
upgrade as large as is needed at this stage."

"We are confident that the speed offered is competitive with other networks in
New Zealand"

i dont know about you kiwi's, but to me that sounds extremely arrogant from a service provider.

typically elsewhere in a case like this the provider actually appreciates the customer chose to sign up with them instead of the competition and would answer along the lines "we are very sorry but at the moment we do not have the capacity to upgrade your connection, however in the next 6 to 12 months we are happy to do so".

see? with a polite answer and vague promise (even if it'd be a lie) i would've just shrugged it off and waited.

i'd still be curious to know is someone actually is on Warp in Wellington. from the lack of replies so far only leaves me to believe what my friend said about the state of Telstra's network in the area has actually at least some truth in it.

yet there is a big sign in downtown advertising the warp service. funny that.

Warpspeed certainly is available in Wellington and has been since August last year. My guess if that you're in a part of the network that presumably has some sort of capacity issues which is why they won't provision it.

There certainly are plans to increase speeds, these plans were also made very clear in August last year when Warpspeed was launched. There has been a huge amount of work that has been done on the network over the last year in preparation for DOCSIS3 and 100Mbps speeds.

please dont take this the wrong way, but are you working for telstra?

i'm happy if they are planning to speed up things, and would likely be signing up for speedier service. once it materializes itself out from the paper/promise-ware.

in the mean time i guess i need to look signing up for Telecom's ADSL2+ which seems to be available in this area. i really want "speedier than 10M" -internet, now.

=)

once that's installed i can provide some head-to-head comparisons if someone is interested as i will also keep the cable (with cheaper plan) just because it has nicer upload and it never hurts to be operator redundant.

Please read the FUG again:

Look on the left side and you will see "Trusted" and "Moderator". There's at least one if not many good reasons why his profile has those two tags.

i did not know asking someone is accusing of anything. i was merely curious. especially that's why i put the "please dont take this the wrong way".

please also understand english is not my native language (it's only my 3rd language), so i might not understand all the nuances of it.

Last year TCL undertook a marketing seminar with publicity etcetc and it is where they announced to the public that warspeed was NOW available in Wellington.

I haven't seen anything to the contary from them.

Naaa, last I heard the sole directory owner of that company went bust, so that leaves no one.

In actual truth I understand that there are a few takers even at that price, makes you have to wonder, for that much money there are other higher performing options for sure.

answers to this really have left me to believe no one actually has managed to get on Warp in Welly. i've yet to find anyone who either knows directly someone on it, or has it themselves.

also, again today Telstra reconfirmed me on email thay indeed 1) lack capacity; 2) have NO PLANS to upgrade it.

nice to know they care about their customers.

You don't choose a book by its cover but it does determine which ones you read.

The statement about a small number of customers using the 25Mbps Warpspeed service in Christchurch was one they made at the very same time they were launching Warpspeed here in Wellington last year and announcing their plans to deploy DOCSIS3 and 100Mbps services in both Wellington and Christchurch.

It certainly wasn't a statement saying they weren't launching it in Wellington because of the small uptake in Christchurch.
