Hey guys,

A few months back I ditched the landline and got a free Vodem (the little black one) to use as my Internet connection.  I use it from a desktop (XP) with 3 laptops connecting through wifi and ICS (I don't run VMC except for when it starts of its own volition, in which case I shut it down).  Everything was working quite well.

Recently, I began getting IE can't display this WEB page errors. I've noticed the IE status bar says:

    WEB Site found
    then Waiting for WEB site
then something about a DNS error
then I get the can't display message

Any thoughts would be appreciated

You should open up the command line and run IPCONFIG /ALL... You will see which DNS is being used. Check if that's correct - it should be automatic, and you shouldn't have entered anything there.

Next, still in the command line, run "PING geekzone.co.nz". It shouldn't reply to ping (we block those) but it should at least resolve and show the IP address. If it works, check that you don't have a proxy configuration in your browser by mistake.

Are you able to past the exact error message you are getting?

Geekzone should resolve to 210.48.73.74 - If this is not resolving it means you have a issue. You could always try OpenDNS from www.opendns.com and see if that sorts out the issue, otherwise if you phone up Vodafone on 0800 921 021 and seek assistance on your mobile broadband from them, remember to be sitting in front of the computer with the issues, these guys are normally very good at providing help.

We use Vodems for our on site guys and in the past week that have had issues resolving our website address when they VPN in. Changing it to the IP address solves the issue

Thanks guys, i will try to capture the error message, but it flashes past on the IE status bar farily quickly.  I get this ffrom IPCONFIG:

PPP adapter Vodafone Mobile Connect:

        Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . :
        Description . . . . . . . . . . . : WAN (PPP/SLIP
        Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-53-45-00-0
        Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
        IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 121.90.255.46
        Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.2
        Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 121.90.255.46
        DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 202.73.206.16
                                            202.73.198.16
        Primary WINS Server . . . . . . . : 10.11.12.13
        Secondary WINS Server . . . . . . : 10.11.12.14

Is the 10.11.12.13 an issue?

I get Pinging www.geekzone.co.nz [210.48.73.74] with 32 bytes of data resolved for your site, but I will try again teh next time it fails

Thanks for the quick response

If you get the "pinging [domain] [210.48.73.74] then you don't have a DNS problem.

On Friday evening (28th May) I has a similar issue - DNS was timing out on the connection - If I connected to my work VPN (via IP) I was then able to browse websites etc using works DNS. This came right a couple of hours later.

Appeared to be an issue with Vodafone DNS resolvers - using nslookup and specifiing other servers (using their IP's) I had perfect name resolution.

And so it continues

A few times a week I get a the IE can't display this page message.  When I fire up IE (home page is Google NZ) the IE status bar says "Looking up Goggle..."  then "WEB Site found" and then someting like "IEFrame.dll\DNSerror". I can't be more exact as the message flashes past fairly quickly!

Pings from the command window time out
eMail continues to run fine!

I disconnect the Vodem and reconnect and everything is fine for a few days.

Is there someting in IE (or FireFox) that I can use to trap the error for you guys?
