I would like to change my data allowance for January so that I will have enough data to download all the Steam games I just purchased.

When I change the data cap amount on the WxC portal, will it change it for next month or the month I'm currently in?

It changes almost straight away (well, within about a half hour at most IME).

If you increase it now, it will be for both the remainder of this month (year!) and all following months, until you change it again.

You can change it at any time, but you can't drop it any lower than what you have already used in the current month - so if you've used 10GB so far this month, you can't set the cap lower than that, but tomorrow (1st of the month), you could log on and set it right down to 1GB if you wanted.

Also, you only pay for what you actually use (up to your cap), and not the cap itself.

That's interesting to know. Thanks.

BTW, depending on the game, you may find that it is downloaded, at least partially, from the NZ steam cache which is counted as 'local' traffic for WxC users and therefore is not charged.  In my experience, if there is a copy on the local cache server you get about 2/3rds locally and the other 1/3 from an Australian server.  While this is a bit annoying and I don't know how to change this behavior, at least you get 2/3rds for free! :)

There are ways to tell which servers you are downloading from, the easiest being to use Netlimiter and then drill down to the detail on the steam download.

Had similar questions myself, in the end managed to grab 18gb free off the local mirror.

I'm glad I got my cap changed without a fuss because it's day 1 of January and I've already got 8GB down with a lot more to go. 5GB of it came from Xnet which I'm very happy about :)
