Is it just me or my phone or a more generalised problem?

About 10% of my calls, incoming or outgoing deteriorate in audio quality within a minute or so.
Initially I can hear OK but as the call goes on the audio chops up and scrambles and never recovers, but
the other party can hear me OK. If I hang up and immediately redial the call is invariably perfectly fine.

This can happen when I am on 3G or if it starts on 3G and switches to GSM during the call. Signal strength makes no difference, can happen on full strength signal or on lower strengths.

It happens in any number of locations on different cell sites.

It has only been doing this in the last month or so.
Nokia N8 phone.

I am currently about to trial another phone then another network on this phone.

Anyone else have this problem?

OK I think I can see where this is going!

94 views, no replies, so clearly this is not a common issue or someone else would have commented by now.
So off to Vodafone shop tomorrow to spend $999 on a new phone and consign the existing one to the knackers yard!

Can you not test another sim card in your phone? Try another VF phone in the same places you use yours?

I have this problem with my Galaxy S. I don't think it's your phone. I have had these problems for about 5 months. Happens twice a week or so. sounds like someone playing a cassette tape in ultrahigh speed.

The phone works OK with an XT SIM. But I am stuck with VF at present.
I can't see the point in trying somebody else's VF SIM in my N8, realistically the SIM is not going to be the cause of this.

So far I have not reproduced the problem in an older phone -Nokia 5800. The rest of the family is on VF with different phones and they don't have this issue.
I would have thought that if this was a network issue we would have had postings from lots of other grumpy VF users and we haven't.

So to me it is pointing towards a faulty phone..

Hang on there. You say that it works OK with an XT sim. It does not work with your OK with your VF sim.
You do not want to try another VF sim in your N8, but you think it is pointing to faulty N8.

What harm is there is trying a 2nd VF sim in your N8?

Have you tried updating or rolling back the firmware on your handset?

Well I guess XT only has a 3G network and does not jump to GSM periodically as VF does.
My assumption (guess) is the issue is something to do with that, as when the audio is scrambled on checking the screen usually it has fallen back to 2G/GSM, but not always I admit.

Does it happen with same SIM in another handset?

I've had my sim replaced, so I'd be inclined to indicate yes.

Have you tried forcing your p;hone into 3G only mode to see if this happens?

There could be various factors here. XT uses the AMR codec as Vodafone do on their 3G network but Vodafone GSM uses the more common GSM codecs. The issue could easily lie within the phone.

This issue could not relate to a SIM card in anyway

All good points thank you. Yes, I can't see how the SIM would be part of this.

Yesterday at Tauranga airport with a solid 5 bar 3G signal intensity the audio scrambled during a call. So locking to 3G only would not eliminate the issue.

I have also tried switching to GSM only without problems for a short while but I keep getting impatient with the data speeds and switching back to 3G.

I admit I have not looked into attempting to roll back the latest firmware update (especially given that it did resolve a substantial Email problem...) but the Nokia forums do not record hoards of users with this same problem as they would if this were a firmware issue.

I still think it is pointing towards a faulty phone, but this is going to be jolly hard to prove given that it is an intermittent problem.
Currently using my old 5800XM (with the same SIM) and have had no problems, but the day is young!

OK so the exact same problem occurred with the other phone today.  Why is this only happening to me??

By elimination this is either a problem specific to two different models of Nokia phones, a dud SIM card (however unlikely that is) or a Vodafone network problem.

Wish me luck, I will now have to beat my head against the VF Customer "Service" Department in Cairo tomorrow....

Have you got example times and dates logged of these calls?

If not I would not call until you have at least 5 examples

Yes I do have those details for several failed calls from the phones' logs.

I think you should get some tin foil, make a tin foil hat, and put it on your head when you make calls.

I bet your brain is emitting EMR, and that the phone just cant handle it. Let us know how you go, even better, make sure you take a picture. ;)
