Hi,
I am seeing a similar behaviour with the Technicolor router provided by Telstra. It was there in the 8.1 preview on my ultrabook wifi, and is also there in the RTM on an ultralbook and a desktop machine.

Tried rebooting the router, no luck

Is it a browser issue only, or can you repeat the issue using nslookup?

I am seeing this across all browsers on the system.

After about 5 minutes or so the issues start.

trying to access any new site (not those visited in the last 5 minutes) will fail (all browsers - chrome, ie, firefox)
Doing a nslookup for those sites is fine
Doing a ping for those sites results in a dodgy ip address all in the range of 198.18.1.20x where the x increments for each site I look up.

I had similar issues like this.I initially thought it was my cisco wifi router. I did a hard reset on the cisco wifi and then set it up again in bridge mode(connected to juniper SRX 110 modem).once setup I rebooted both devices and it worked fine

Hey Dave, hope you are well.

Looks like you've run into the same issues I have with wi-fi on Windows 8.1 and have arrived to the same solution. Hadn't noticed this thread before posting this one but Maurico pointed me here and I see you're probably a step ahead. Have you found any other solutions than using explicit DNS server entries for IPv4?

I think I had the same problem today. Turned my laptop on and WiFi was enabled. It connected to my LAN via ethernet and via WiFi. I had no connectivity at all - DNS failing. Turned off WiFi, restarted and it works again.

Installed Windows 8.1 today and had this issue - tried two different PCIe adapters as well.

Fixed it by manually setting the DNS servers on the adapter. (thanks guys!)

I'm using the following servers:

122.56.237.1
210.55.111.1

Does anyone know if there are any different or better DNS servers for Telecom VDSL in Wellington?

Edit: Got a reply from ASUS support, saying that their drivers aren't updated for 8.1 yet, but will be updated soon. :)

Hi, I upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 this morning and am also now experiencing this problem. Certain IP addresses seem to resolve to 192.18.1.xxx when pinged. However, if I ping them from my Windows Server 2012 box on the same network, they resolve correctly and then also resolve correctly on the Windows 8.1 machine. If I use 'ipconfig /flushdns', it'll also work again for a while.

Is this a Windows 8.1 problem or a router problem or a little of each? I'm using the standard Telecom Technicolor VDSL router.

Has anyone been able to find a fix that doesn't require manual DNS settings?

Just checked in on another thread I started on the Telstra Crowd Support forums at http://crowdsupport.telstra.com.au/t5/Home-Broadband/Windows-8-1-RTM-Technicolor-TG587n-v3-DNS-Issues/td-p/189123

Investigations have identified an incompatibility between Windows 8.1 (releasing 18/10/2013) and the 10.x series of Technicolor Firmware (TG587n V3 & TG797n V3).

The issue relates to the way that Windows 8.1 performs DNS lookups, which differs from all previous versions of Windows OS. This change has exposed a timing/race condition bug within the Technicolor gateway firmware, and results in some webpages failing to load.

To rectify this issue, Technicolor have identified a temporary workaround that can be applied via our remote management system. The delivery of this fix is currently being trialled for deployment next week. Technicolor have engineered a firmware fix that will be incorporated in the next maintenance release.

Thanks for the link and information - I suspected as much. I've contacted Telecom to check whether they're aware of this issue and find out the steps they're taking to resolve it. Did no-one at Technicolor, Telecom or anywhere else think to check their modems with Windows 8.1 before it was released?

Maybe no one at Microsoft told anyone that this was happening as it was OK during the beta trials.

I was thinking more Technicolor than Telecom, but Windows 8.1 is a pretty major release, so I don't think it's unreasonable to expect some sort of testing beforehand.

my telecom TG589vn v2 also having this problem.
manually set the DNS server fix this problem. or set up a script that do "ipconfig /flushdns" every few minutes also fix this problem if you don't want customize the DNS... Or just stay away from 8.1 before the new firmware for the route come up...
